Today the Town held a street dedication ceremony in memory of Lawrence O. Rose, U.S. Army, 101st Airborne. PFC Rose was killed in action in Vietnam 58 years ago. Lawrence Rose grew up on Lake Lucille and several members of his family including his brother Glenn still reside there. He attended Clarkstown schools. PFC Rose was awarded the Purple Heart and several other awards.

Supervisor Hoehmann and Council members Valentino and Axelrod were joined by many neighbors, friends, Vietnam veterans, the VFW and American Legion for the unveiling. Thanks to the Clarkstown Police Department Honor Guard, Highway Department, DEFM staff and Susan Branam from the Rockland County Veterans Service Agency, singer Autumn Nardini and family friend Doug Davidson for the beautiful remarks.

With more than 760 signatures on the petition urging the New York State Legislature and Governor to pass the Clarkstown Community Preservation Act, Clarkstown residents have made their voices heard in support of protecting open space.

Clarkstown is at a critical juncture, and legislation establishing a Community Preservation Fund through a multi-step democratic process is among the most important issues facing our town today.

A Community Preservation Fund is one of the most effective tools available to local governments for environmental conservation and the protection of natural resources. As reinforced by recent initiatives such as the Natural Capital Resolution, the health of our ecosystems is directly linked to the health, resilience, and long-term prosperity of our community. Preserving open space safeguards clean water, wildlife habitats, recreational opportunities, and the natural character that makes Clarkstown such a desirable place to live.

Our State Senator and Assemblyman have been working diligently to enact this legislation and ensure that future generations can benefit from the preservation of Clarkstown's open spaces.

The petition remains active, and with the state legislative session ending on Thursday, June 4th, time is running short. If you have not yet signed the petition, we encourage you to join your neighbors in supporting this vital effort to protect Clarkstown's open space for generations to come. Watchfires – VVA Chapter 333 05/29/2026

In 1987, Rockland County Vietnam Veterans decided to commemorate Memorial Day by observing a Watchfire. Rockland County has four permanent sites where Vietnam Veterans observe the annual Watchfires: Bowline Point Park in Haverstraw, Eugene Levy Park on Route 45 in Ramapo, the East End of Piermont Pier in Piermont, and Clausland Mountain Park in Orangeburg.

The origins of Watchfires in the Hudson Valley date back to the Revolutionary War, when the Colonists along the Hudson River used them to alert residents that the British were approaching. The Watchfires were also used to help soldiers separated from their units return safely.

The Watchfires are observed for the 24 hours of May 30, each year to honor troops that were lost in war and have never returned to enjoy their family and friends as a consequence of war.
