Emergency Nurses Week starts today! 🏥

When our crews bring a patient through the ED doors, emergency nurses are the ones ready and waiting. They take our handoff, pick up right where we left off, and keep the chain of care going without missing a beat.

Today is World Mental Health Day, and this year’s theme is Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change. 💙

The people who know the most about mental health are often the ones who have lived it. Their stories, their struggles, and their recovery hold knowledge no textbook can teach.

As paramedics, we meet people during some of their hardest moments. We’ve learned that one of the most powerful things we can do is listen. Really listen.

The same goes for our own team. The weight of this job doesn’t always stay on the scene, and that’s why Rockland Paramedic Services is committed to the health and wellness of our employees. Over the last several years, we’ve built a list of mental health providers who understand the unique demands of first responder work, offered resiliency training, and hosted activities for our team’s families.

And we’re excited to share what’s next: our very own Peer Support Team. Made up of RPS paramedics, the team is trained to help colleagues navigate everything from everyday life challenges to difficult patient encounters. We expect to officially launch the team later this month, and we couldn’t be prouder to offer this support to everyone at RPS. Because sometimes the person who understands best is someone who’s been there too.

This World Mental Health Day, let’s keep the conversation going. Listen without judgment and know that asking for help is a sign of strength.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and this year's message is simple: Don't make it easy for them. 🔒

Here's a surprising stat: about 2 in 3 people say they're confident they can spot a scam email or link, but only about 1 in 3 always check messages before clicking.

Scammers count on us being busy. And they're getting more convincing, including AI-generated calls and messages that sound real, some even claiming to be about your insurance or medical bills.

You don't need to be a tech expert to protect yourself. Three simple habits go a long way:
📞 Pause before responding to any unexpected call, text, or email asking for your insurance, Medicare, or Social Security number
🔁 If it feels urgent, hang up and call back at a number you trust
🔐 Turn on multi-factor authentication for your email, bank, and patient portals

When you call 911, you trust us with your personal information too. Protecting your privacy is part of the care we provide on every call.

Fire Prevention Week starts today, and this year's theme is Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower. ⚡

Every time you plug in, you have the power to make a safe choice. Here are your charging superpowers from the National Fire Protection Association:

🔌 Cheap charger? Don't chance it. Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.

🛏️ Soft surface? Hard pass. Charge on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or bare floor, never on a bed, pillow, or couch.

🔋 Fully charged? Time to unplug. Leaving devices plugged in adds heat and stress to the battery.

🛴 For tools and rides, charge outside. Charge e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible, and never block an exit while charging.

⚠️ Feels hot? Stop using it. If a device gets very hot, swells, smells strange, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds, stop using it.

And remember, battery safety starts before you plug in. Look for products listed by a recognized testing lab like UL, ETL, or CSA.

Working smoke alarms and a home fire escape plan can make a life-saving difference. We're proud to stand alongside Rockland's fire departments this week and every week. 🚒

Does your business, school, or organization have an emergency action plan?

If an emergency happened tomorrow, would your team know what to do? Most organizations don't have a plan in place and that's exactly what the American Red Cross Ready Rating Program is designed to help with.

Ready Rating is a free program that gives businesses, schools, and community organizations access to tools, resources, and self-assessment guides to evaluate and improve their emergency preparedness. You can even use it to build a customized Emergency Action Plan template for your organization.

This National Preparedness Month, we're encouraging every Rockland County organization to take 10 minutes and review this program. It's free, it's straightforward, and it could make all the difference when it matters most. Small business owners with 500 or fewer employees who complete an online self-assessment through Ready Rating are also automatically eligible for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Readiness for Resiliency (R4R) program. Visit the R4R page to register your business to potentially qualify for a $5,000 disaster recovery grant.
