We are just one month away from a fascinating talk by New Glarus's own Gregg Jamison! Join us on Thursday, November 19th at 6 PM to learn more about the UW's Missing in Action Recovery and Identification Project.
The University of Wisconsin's MIA RIP works to recover missing U.S. military personnel from past global conflicts and honor their sacrifice. They work to identify and recover deceased missing in action US service members by conducting field excavations and providing research assistance to families of missing service members. The project consists of a team of academic experts and student volunteers in the fields of history, archaeology, forensic anthropology, and biology.
We spend every day trying to find the missing puzzle piece in someone else’s genealogy as if it were our own family. When our nation sends young men and women in uniform to war, we make an implicit promise that we will do everything in our power to bring them home – should they make the ultimate sacrifice. 1,500 of the 82,000 MIA American service members hail from the state of Wisconsin: approximately 1,300 were lost during WWII, over 160 were lost in the Korean War, 26 are missing from the Vietnam War, and one service member is missing as the result of other Cold War-era operations.
Speaker Dr. Gregg Jamison is the Lead Archaeologist of the University of Wisconsin's MIA RIP program. He has conducted fieldwork in India, Pakistan, Oman, France, Belgium, Germany, Papua New Guinea, and throughout the Midwest, particularly Wisconsin. He lives in New Glarus with his wife and three children.
As this is an after-hours event, please enter the library through the east-side door off of Railroad Street. This event is free and open to the public.
