Painted turtles are some of the most widespread turtles in North America. They live in slow-moving fresh water and are one of few species that are specially adapted to tolerate extended periods of freezing temperatures. Painted turtles have a dark olive or brown carapace and can be identified by the red, orange, or yellow stripes on the edges of the shell and on their legs and neck.
Please refrain from collecting turtles as pets. You will lose interest well before the 50-75 years they can live. Nature takes the best care of them!
