Under Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s Executive Order 21, carriers transporting hay in any part of Virginia can receive temporary over-width exemption waivers to facilitate the movement of essential agricultural supplies of hay.

The over-width waiver will go into effect on October 1, 2026 and will remain in force for 30 days.

The prolonged drought has resulted in a 35% statewide loss in hay yields, with losses reaching 70% in some areas, creating a significant hay shortage for livestock producers.

If you are a producer and you need help finding hay or talking through alternative herd management decisions, reach out to your local Virginia Cooperative Extension office.

With recent dry conditions impacting forage across the Commonwealth, connecting livestock producers with quality feed is critical. VDACS maintains the Hay Clearing House to bridge the gap between farmers who need hay and those with surplus hay for sale.🌾

Due to current drought conditions, our list is updated weekly to keep listings as accurate and timely as possible for our ag community. Don’t forget to check current over-width transport waiver guidelines.

Whether you are looking to source hay for your herd or have inventory to list, check the current directory here: https://www.vdacs.virginia.gov/pdf/hay.pdf

Frost prevention Pollak Vineyards Virginia experienced a widespread frost event this spring. Thankfully it was prior to full bud break, and most growers are reporting normal or only slightly reduced yields. Some varieties and sites were unfortunately less fortunate.
