Meet the Southeast Iowa Flaming Marshmallows!

The Southeast Iowa Flaming Marshmallows Special Olympics Team is gearing up for its 8th year, and they’re welcoming new athletes!

Open to athletes ages 8–100, the Flaming Marshmallows offer opportunities to try a variety of sports, build skills, make friends, and experience the joy of being part of a team. Sports include: softball, football, bowling, snowshoe, basketball, cheer, track/field, bocce, cycling, and soccer. Cheerleading and basketball start November 2nd.

All sports are based on the athlete's skill level.​ Athletes can choose the sports they’re interested in, and there is no cost to join. Practices are held in both Mount Pleasant and Fairfield, making it easier for athletes and families to participate.

Interested in learning more or joining the team? Stop by a practice, meet the team, ask questions, and find out how to become a Flaming Marshmallow!

📍 Mount Pleasant: Mondays at 6:00 p.m. at MPCSD Central Campus Gym

Help! Hamlet Needs Your Stuff!

The Masqued Tigers are gearing up for The Hamlet Thrill-ma-geddon, and we need your help! Instead of spending our entire budget on props, we’re hoping our community might have a few things tucked away in garages, basements, or storage sheds that could make their theatrical debut.

We’re looking to borrow:
- Tennis rackets (2)
- Shuffleboard cues and sticks OR an indoor Putt-Putt
- Anything that looks like it belongs at an island resort!

Have something we could borrow? Send us a message! We’ll take good care of your items and return them after the show. Your help will bring Shakespeare to life in the most ridiculous way possible!

New London Community School District is looking for a High School Basketball Cheer Coach to join our athletic program! We're looking for someone who enjoys working with students, building school spirit, and helping athletes develop confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills.

Cheerleading, dance, gymnastics, or coaching experience is helpful, but we're also interested in someone who is enthusiastic, dependable, and ready to support our Tigers!

Position: Basketball Cheer Coach (Grades 9–12)
Stipend: $849
Anticipated Start Date: November 2, 2026

This afternoon, I had the opportunity to ride along on one of our New London bus routes. I had a blast visiting with students, getting the "tea" (new lingo for me) on all kinds of things, and just enjoying the opportunity to see a little more of the community our students call home.

As students got off at their stops, I noticed how many took the time to thank their bus driver and wish him a good weekend. What struck me was that even some of our youngest students were doing this. Such a simple gesture, but one that says a lot about the kindness and gratitude already taking root in our kids.

Last week, I attended the funeral of someone very dear to my heart. During the service, someone shared a story about the "trees" of a community. He talked about growing up surrounded by people who were like the great oaks and maples. People who were deeply rooted, dependable, and always there. And as he's gotten older, he's realized that some of those trees are disappearing, and it's up to the next generations to grow into their places. I've thought about those words a lot this past week.

When I look around New London, I see so many of those trees. The people who show up, volunteer, coach, organize, support, and pour their hearts and hands into making this community and school what it is. So much of what makes a small town special happens because people give their time, often without anyone even knowing.

And this afternoon, watching those young students take a moment to say "thank you," I couldn't help but think that maybe that's where the next generation of those trees begins. With kindness. With gratitude. With learning to appreciate the people who show up for us.

We need to keep growing those trees. And we need to make sure the ones who have been standing strong for years know just how much they matter.

​Synopsis: After their budget is slashed, the drama club turns to Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy to raise cash. But it’s not tickets that are going to fund this year’s show. It’s sweet, sweet corporate sponsorship and mid-play commercial advertising!​ The sponsors demand changes in the stodgy old script, but who cares if Shakespeare never wrote musical numbers with backup dancers or post-apocalyptic zombie battles?​ Get ready for a lightning-quick, hilarious parody of the greatest play in the English language!
