The New London Police Department is warning residents about an active phone scam circulating in our community. In recent days, officers have responded to three separate reports of this scam, which appears to be primarily targeting Spanish-speaking residents and elderly family members.

How the Scam Works:

Callers contact victims claiming that a family member — often a daughter or granddaughter — has been involved in an "incident" or "accident." The caller then impersonates law enforcement, identifying himself as "Officer" and demands money be delivered in person at a public location to resolve the situation.

Key Details to Know:

• 📞 The scammers are using a TextNow number that becomes "out of service" when victims attempt to call back.

• 💵 They request cash payment and ask to meet in a public place.

• 👮 They falsely claim to be a police officer to create urgency and fear.

• 👵 Elderly residents with Spanish-speaking family members appear to be the primary targets.

What You Should Do:

✅ Hang up immediately if you receive a call like this.
✅ Do not send money or agree to meet anyone claiming to be
law enforcement over the phone.
✅ Call your family member directly to confirm their safety.
✅ Report the call to the New London Police Department.

Important Reminder: The New London Police Department will never call you demanding money or ask you to meet an officer in a public place to hand over cash. Real officers do not collect payments from citizens to resolve incidents involving family members.

New London Police Investigating Crash Involving Moped and SUV on Williams Street

NEW LONDON, CT — On Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at approximately 5:52 p.m., officers of the New London Police Department responded to the area of 423 Williams Street for a reported motor vehicle accident with injuries involving a moped and an SUV.

Initial reports indicated that the involved SUV, operated by an adult male, had fled the scene prior to officers' arrival.

Upon arrival, officers located the operator of the moped, an adult male, who appeared semi-conscious at the time of contact. The involved SUV subsequently returned to the scene, and police contact was made with its operator.

The moped operator was transported to L+M Hospital for further medical care. The sustained injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

The investigation into this crash remains active and ongoing.

New London Police Department Advises Motorists of Upcoming CTDOT Milling and Resurfacing Project on Route 1

NEW LONDON, CT — The New London Police Department is advising motorists of an upcoming Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) milling and resurfacing project that will impact a segment of Route 1 in Waterford and New London. Motorists traveling through the affected area should anticipate nighttime lane closures and plan accordingly.
Project Overview

CTDOT has announced that Project No. DOT01720558CN "DD" will consist of milling and resurfacing a 1.55-mile segment of Route 1 from Route 156 (Rope Ferry Road) in Waterford to Service Route 641 (Jefferson Avenue) in New London.

The project is scheduled to begin on Wednesday evening, June 24, 2026, and is anticipated to be completed by Thursday morning, July 30, 2026.

This project is included in CTDOT's 2026 Vendor Resurfacing Program.

Milling Phase

- Wednesday evening, June 24 – Thursday morning, July 2, 2026

Resurfacing Phase

- Sunday evening, July 19 – Thursday morning, July 30, 2026

Lane Closure & Detour Information

Motorists can expect lane closures on Route 1 from Route 156 (Rope Ferry Road) in Waterford to Service Route 641 (Jefferson Avenue) in New London.

• Work Hours: 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., Sunday evening through Friday morning

• Traffic Control: Traffic control personnel, crash attenuator vehicles, and signing patterns will guide motorists safely through the work zone.

Important Reminders for Motorists

• Modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions.

• Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving in and around the work zone.

New London Man Arrested Following an Incident at Ocean Beach Park; Investigation Ongoing

NEW LONDON, CT — On Tuesday, 6/16/2026, at approximately 11:38 a.m., New London Police responded to Ocean Beach Park for a report of a male subject displaying what appeared to be a firearm to a small group.

According to the initial call for service, the subject — described as wearing all black clothing, a mask, red Crocs-style footwear, and red nail polish — was operating a moped when he allegedly lifted his shirt to reveal what appeared to be "the handle of a G***k" to a small group. The suspect fled the park prior to officers' arrival on scene.

Shortly thereafter, responding officers observed a moped and operator matching the provided description traveling northbound on Montauk Avenue. When officers attempted a vehicle stop for further investigation, the operator failed to yield and engaged officers in a pursuit. Officers recognized the subject from a prior arrest on June 1, 2026, for brandishing a facsimile weapon while operating a moped in the area of Union Street and Governor Winthrop Boulevard in New London.

The subject was located a short time later on Connecticut Avenue and taken into custody without further incident.

Carlos Santana-Mateo, DOB 12/25/2006, of New London, CT was charged with the following violations:

- Breach of Peace
- Engaging Police in Pursuit
- Disobeying Direction of Officer
- Reckless Driving
- Failure to Obey Stop Sign
- Failure to Drive Right
- Failure to Obey Traffic Control Signal
- Driving Wrong Way on One Way

The investigation remains active.

NEW LONDON, CT — The New London Police Department is reporting the arrest of a New London man following an early-morning incident involving vehicle pursuits that ended in Waterford.

On Saturday, June 13, 2026, at approximately 2:23 a.m., a New London officer attempted a motor vehicle stop on a vehicle associated with an active criminal investigation. The vehicle immediately engaged police in a pursuit.

Following a brief pursuit, the vehicle evaded police. Information regarding the suspect vehicle was broadcast to area police departments.

The vehicle was subsequently located a second time and again engaged police in a pursuit. The suspect vehicle was ultimately located in Waterford, where an individual was taken into custody.

The accused has been identified as Cruz Bonilla Jr., DOB 09/15/1992, of New London

Cruz Bonilla Jr. was arrested and charged with the following offenses:

· Engaging Police in Pursuit
· Disobeying Direction of Officer
· Reckless Driving
· Failure to Obey Traffic Control Signal
· Operation Under Suspension

NEW LONDON, CT - The New London Police Department is reporting the arrest of two individuals following a physical altercation involving multiple parties on Friday evening.

On Friday, June 12, 2026, at approximately 6:08 p.m., officers responded to reports of multiple people fighting in the area of the intersection of Blinman Street and Bank Street in New London.

Upon arrival, officers located an adult male who was transported to the hospital for medical treatment and subsequently released.

Following an on-scene investigation, two individuals were taken into custody:

· Melvin Hooks Jr., DOB 09/14/1986, of New
London

· Samuel Roche-Olan, DOB 03/17/1969, of
New London

Both individuals were arrested and charged with:

· Assault in the 2nd Degree
· Breach of Peace

Update News Release: New London Police Investigating Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash

New London, CT — The New London Police Department is providing an update regarding the fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at approximately 12:02 p.m. in the area of Phillips Street and Fourth Avenue in New London.

As previously reported, officers responded to the area for a reported two-vehicle motor vehicle crash involving injuries. Upon arrival, officers located two vehicle operators involved in the crash. One operator was unresponsive at the time of contact, while the other operator was alert and conscious. Both operators were transported to the hospital for treatment. The unresponsive operator was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The next of kin of the deceased operator has been notified. The deceased operator has been identified as Reinaldo Cintron, DOB 06/25/1942, of New London, CT.

The operator of the other involved vehicle has been identified as Amalia Santiago, DOB 12/26/1984, of New London, CT.

The accident investigation remains active.

New London Police Investigating Shooting Incident; Two Victims Hospitalized

NEW LONDON, CT – The New London Police Department is actively investigating a shooting incident that occurred on the evening of Wednesday, June 10, 2026.

At approximately 9:16 p.m., officers on patrol reported hearing gunshots in the vicinity of Williams Street and Broad Street. Officers immediately responded and began canvassing the area. During their search, evidence of shots fired was discovered in the area of Broad Street and Hempstead Street.

Further investigation revealed that two adult gunshot victims had arrived at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for treatment. Both individuals sustained gunshot wounds to their lower extremities. Their medical conditions continue to be monitored and evaluated by hospital staff.

Members of the Detective Bureau responded to collect evidence and process the crime scene. The investigation is ongoing, and detectives are working to identify suspects and determine the circumstances surrounding this incident.
