This week, Fran and I traveled throughout Ohio's Appalachian region to celebrate the completion of community revitalization projects made possible with support from the Appalachian Community Grant Program's Wonderful Waterfronts Initiative. These new revitalization projects will improve quality of life for residents and attract new visitors to explore the region.

Today, I joined Ohio State Fire Marshal Kevin Reardon to unveil the Ohio Fire Academy's new Search and Rescue Building. This unique, state-of-the-art facility provides our first responders the opportunity to train in a variety of realistic environments, which helps to ensure their safety on the job and equips them with the experience to skillfully tackle emergency calls every single day. bit.ly/3VQrqhD

Ohio's Appalachian Community Grant Program, which has invested $500 million into Ohio's 32 Appalachian counties, is truly making a difference.

Today, I enjoyed seeing how Ashtabula and Sardis used their grants to increase quality of life in the region, attract more visitors, and boost the economy.

Fran and I are saddened to learn of the death of Sgt. Jacob Roesler of the Clay Township Police Department, who was killed in the line of duty today while responding to a call. We are grateful for his dedication to serving his community. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, fellow officers, and everyone at the Clay Township Police Department during this difficult time.

I have ordered the flags of the United States and Ohio to be lowered to half-staff until sunset on the day of Sgt. Roesler's funeral.

Today, CMS Administrator Dr. Oz and I announced that $92 million is being awarded from the Rural Health Transportation Program to manage chronic illnesses and expand access to preventive, primary, maternal, and behavioral healthcare in rural areas.

These investments will transform healthcare in rural Ohio, and we are grateful to Dr. Oz and the Trump Administration for standing up this important program and partnering with us to ensure that all Ohioans, regardless of where they live, have access to the care they need.

It was a pleasure to be back in East Palestine today, where Fran and I joined local community leaders, Senator Jon Husted, Lt. Governor Jim Tressel, President Bill Johnson, and others to announce the next phase of plans for a new regional first responder training center in East Palestine.

Once built, this new center will draw people from all over the country to East Palestine, strengthening not only the public safety workforce but also the economy of this resilient community. https://bit.ly/4ysfdgl

This morning, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Lt. Governor Jim Tressel will join Youngstown State University (YSU), the Village of East Palestine, Norfolk Southern, and other state and federal leaders to provide an update on plans for a new regional first responder training center in East Palestine.

First proposed by Governor DeWine following the February 2023 Norfolk Southern train derailment, the training center – known as the YSU RAPID center – will provide specialized, hands-on training for firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency medical personnel, and other first responders.

Through a partnership with YSU, the project has expanded to include higher education and workforce development opportunities in fire science, public safety, and emergency response.

Thursday’s event will highlight progress on the project, including new conceptual renderings and additional contributions by Norfolk Southern to further supplement emergency response training.
