The New London Community Meal Center would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to for their continued financial support of our mission to ensure that everyone who needs a meal receives one — no questions asked.

For many years, Liberty Bank has stood beside us as a dedicated community partner, and this year’s generous donation of $5,000 will help us continue providing meals, compassion, and hope to our neighbors in need.

We are deeply grateful for Liberty Bank’s ongoing commitment to helping strengthen our community and support those facing food insecurity. Together, we are making a difference one meal at a time.

Thank you, Liberty Bank, for your generosity and partnership!

Meet our May volunteer of the month: Stephanie Cyr. Stephanie has been volunteering at the Meal Center for about 20 years. She volunteers on the 3rd Wednesday of each month for the dinner meal. She is the unofficial coordinator for the group from Gales Ferry United Methodist Church. This group of 5-6 members does the dinner prep, serving and cleanup. Stephanie is a retired teacher who is passionate about helping people. She has built a strong relationship with the staff, the volunteers and the guests. Stephanie believes that everyone enjoys seeing a friendly face and strives to be that person for the Meal Center guests. She also believes that we should all help others and if we have the time and the opportunity we should volunteer. Stephanie is an active volunteer at her church and leads youth volunteers in making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for Saint Vincent de Paul in Norwich. Thank you, Stephanie, for your dedication to the hungry in New London county.

This is no April Fool's joke!

Meet our April volunteer of the month: Martin Lazarus. Martin became involved with the Meal Center when his sons did their high school community service in the kitchen. He accompanied them for their years of service and found that he enjoyed the experience. Martin has been back at the Meal Center for about 4 years, volunteering with the Temple Emanuel group. They provide dinner on the third Tuesday of each month. Their specialty is homemade ziti, meatballs, salad and dessert. There is a core group of about 10-12 people who provide the prepared food, serve, and clean up. Martin feels good about contributing to the community, giving back, and building relationships with the Meal Center patrons. Martin is also a 50-year volunteer at the Goshen Fire Station and is the liaison between the Meal Center and the fire station. He has delivered excess food from Goshen events, clothing, and surplus plates and flatware to the Meal Center. Thank you, Martin, for all that you do for the patrons of the Meal Center.

Meet our February volunteer of the month: Diamond Acres. Diamond has been volunteering at the Meal Center for about 3 years. She initially came in on her own (as fill-in for her first year) and is passionate about feeding people. Diamond organized a group from her church, Shoreline Church in Old Lyme, that volunteers for the dinner meal on the 5th Thursday of the month. Diamond is pictured with her sister, Heaven, whom she has custody of. Heather and her friends from NFA are part of the church group and enjoy helping with meal prep, serving, and clean- up. Both Diamond and Heaven are anchored in their faith and have a strong desire to give back to the community. Besides volunteering with the church group, Diamond volunteers each Friday at the lunch meal. She is also a volunteer EMT at the New London firehouse and leads her church’s homeless ministry in a mission to set up transitional housing for those in need. Thank you, Diamond, for your dedication to the needs of the patrons of the Meal Center.

Meet our January volunteer of the month: Stacy Harrison. Stacy has been volunteering with the Wednesday lunch group for about 4 months. Previous to that she had been donating food to the Meal Center for about 1.5 years. While attending a Meal Center fundraiser, Stacy was approached by a board member and invited to volunteer in the kitchen where she offers her support in meal prep. Stacy is a take charge person and has updated the needs of the Meal Center on the white board and solicited donations of these items on social media. She is also known as the “Bean Lady”. Stacy noticed the large quantities of dry beans on hand and took it upon herself to soak about 10 lbs. of beans each week and then cook them so that they are ready to be added to nutritious dishes prepared in the kitchen. Stacy is a New London resident who believes that it is everyone’s civic duty to ensure that the people in the community (including veterans, the elderly, disabled, working parents, etc.) have access to nutritious meals, clean water and a warm place to stay. “When we shore each other up, we all rise” is a statement of her beliefs. Thank you, Stacy, for putting your beliefs into action for the benefit of the hungry in the New London community.
