We support mentoring, leadership training and professional development opportunities for Coast Guard women in uniform and civilians, with the goal of increasing women’s retention in the Coast Guard and providing a bridge for service personnel to achieve success following their Coast Guard careers. To provide optimal support for these efforts, the Women's Leadership Initiative Fund is seeking to es

tablish a $500K endowment, which would yield an average of $20K each year in perpetuity. This $20K will be spent on the programs described above. The Governance Committee will continually evaluate and update how funds are allocated to ensure programs with the greatest impact are supported. An endowment is a critical step for the Women’s Leadership Initiative Fund — it would allow energy to shift from fundraising to planning and executing exceptional programs. What is the money used for?

1. Periodic leadership and professional development forums at the Coast Guard Academy (typically through the Cadet Woman’s Leadership Council) where successful women share experiences and provide cadets with exposure to potential role models. Note: male cadets are always welcome to attend.

2. Women’s leadership programs for cadets, active and reserve members, civilian, and retired personnel held at or away from the Academy, including speaking programs and interactive leadership events.

3. Conference and travel fees for cadets to attend external professional women’s symposia—helping cadets connect on a deeper level to more senior women across career fields building lifelong mentoring connections.

4. Formal e-mentoring programs connecting cadets, officers, and civilians using technology to bridge distances. There are a number of ways you can get involved:

1. Make a tax deductable one-time or recurring donation to the WLIF through the USCGA Alumni Association, a non-profit organization.

2. Help the Governance Committee plan a local fundraising event or women’s leadership event.

3. Volunteer to participate as a member of the Governance Committee.

Established in 2012 as an affiliate of the USCGA Alumni Association, the Women’s Leadership Initiative uses its fund and endowment to support initiatives providing leadership training and professional development opportunities for all Coast Guard women in uniform and civilians, with the goal of increasing women’s retention in the Coast Guard and to provide a bridge for service personnel to achieve success following their Coast Guard careers.

Our call to action

The Coast Guard has done well in recruiting women over the past few years; the numbers for women accessions through Cape May and Officer Candidate School has been on a steady increase – now at 27 percent and 23 percent respectively – and the Coast Guard Academy Class of 2018 is comprised of 36 percent women. However, recruitment is not enough and retention of women continues to be a challenge. Overall, women in the Coast Guard are retained, advanced and promoted at lower rates than their male peers; women comprise just 15 percent of the active duty force and 17 percent of the reserve force. Trends are similar with civilian employees. While the number of women civilian employees exceeds labor force numbers – women make up 30 percent of the civilian workforce – they are employed at a lower grade than other federal agencies and the labor force as a whole.
