Flood Protection Authority It is one of the largest flood protection systems in the world. We then reopen all of the floodgates.

The Flood Protection Authority operates and maintains the system that protects the Greater New Orleans region on the east bank of the Mississippi River from floods, storms and hurricanes. How Your Flood Defense System Works:

BEFORE:
Preparation for the next hurricane season always begins the day after the previous season ends. Throughout the year, the Flood Protection Authority inspects, maintains and regularly exercises all components of the flood risk reduction system. Our emergency procedures are consistently updated and we practice “drill runs” by using those procedures to ensure that our employees are prepared to respond to any potential flood threat. DURING:
As a storm approaches, we begin the systematic closing of valves, flood gates, lift gates, and sector gates. During a storm, all of our essential employees stay in safe houses while monitoring each flood protection component to make sure they are operating properly. AFTER:
After the storm has passed and the emergency is over, we systematically inspect all of the flood protection components to determine if any damages occurred and immediately repair them to make sure they are ready for the next threat.

Storm surge is one of the most significant threats during a hurricane.

Surge barriers are designed to help reduce that risk by limiting the movement of storm surge into protected areas during severe weather events.

These structures represent a major investment in regional resilience and play a critical role within the larger flood protection system serving Southeast Louisiana.

RAVE Alerts help you stay connected to important updates about flood protection operations, road closures, and changing conditions.

The best time to sign up isn't when a storm is approaching, it's today.

Whether it's a tropical storm, hurricane, or other significant event, staying connected can help you make informed decisions before, during, and after severe weather.

Don't wait until a storm is approaching to sign up. Register for alerts and stay informed.

FPA-East Regional Director L. Jeff Williams recently presented at the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Joint Engineering Training Symposium on building and financing 50 years of flood resilience.

Resilient infrastructure requires more than building the next project. It requires looking decades ahead at the cost of operating, maintaining, rehabilitating and adapting the system.

Plan beyond the project. Finance the mission.

When heavy rainfall occurs, pump stations play an important role in moving water through the drainage system and away from communities.

While they may not always be visible, pump stations are a critical component of the region's flood protection network, working alongside canals, levees, floodgates, and surge barriers.

Every part of the system has a purpose and every part contributes to reducing flood risk.

You probably drive past a levee all the time without giving it much thought.

But these structures play a big role in helping reduce flood risk across Southeast Louisiana.

Levees act as barriers between our communities and rising water, and they're just one piece of a much larger flood protection system.

In this series, we'll break down how the different parts of the system work together and introduce you to the people who help keep it running.

Got a question about levees? Drop it in the comments.
