The Coast Guard Auxiliary University Program (AUP) is shaping the next generation of leaders. College students across the country can join the Auxiliary and gain hands-on experience. They build leadership, incident management, and operational skills.

At more than 30 colleges and universities, young adults have a direct pathway to serve their country while completing their degree. AUP is a launch pad for leadership; students train alongside active-duty and auxiliary personnel in fields like IT, Environmental Response, Maritime strategy, and recreational boating safety- building real-world skills that matter.

Not all colleges and universities have a unit on campus; there is a virtual option if your school does not have a unit. And if you are interested, please visit www.cgauxedu.us.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary's Paddlecraft (AUXPAD) program has become one of the most important modern additions to recreational boating safety - especially kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddle-boarding. Paddlecraft make up a large share of boating activity and have surged in popularity across the United States. The AUXPAD program extends the Coast Guard's reach into areas where small craft incidents occur most frequently: rivers, creeks, bays, and near -shore waters with trained Auxiliarist that educate paddlers before they launch. Auxiliarists are the eyes and ears where Coast Guard boats may not easily operate, helping to reduce the number of search and rescue cases that the U.S. Coast Guard responds to. Pictured are Auxiliarists conducting training during a Heartland District Coastal Region training event held on Fowle River in Mobile AL. This was one of many different trainings that took place.

Flight Special Operations Weathermen are highly trained meteorology professionals who provide advanced atmospheric intelligence. Pictured is a weatherman who rides along with an Auxiliarist to drop off his parachute gear after a deliberate water drop in Lake Worth in Ft. Worth, Texas. The mission allowed 12 service members from the Texas Air National Guard to parachute out of a C-130 Hercules at an altitude of 1000 feet into Lake Worth. The Coast Guard Auxiliary's support is a powerful example of how volunteers amplify capability. Citizens stepping forward to strengthen service missions.

Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer. Traffic on coastal waterways and lakes will be heavier than normal. Wear a life jacket, file a float plan, Plan ahead, stay sober, stay aware, and make safety part of every decision on the water.
