Montford Point Marine Receives Congressional Gold Medal

Montford Point Marine Henry B. Edwards, 97, receives the Congressional Gold Medal from Maj. Gen. Douglas K. Clark, deputy commander of Marine Forces Reserve and Marine Forces South, during a ceremony in New Orleans, Sept. 27, 2026.

Edwards enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1946 and trained at Montford Point, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was among the approximately 20,000 African American men who trained there from 1942 to 1949 and helped break racial barriers within the Marine Corps. His recognition also reflects a lifetime of public service after leaving the Corps, including a career with the U.S. Department of Labor and decades of service through his church and community.

Ready Then. Ready Now.

📍 Inchon, South Korea, Sept. 15, 1950

On Sept. 15, 1950, Allied forces launched an amphibious assault at Inchon, striking behind North Korean lines during the Korean War. Thousands of Reserve Marines had been activated to reinforce the 1st Marine Division, Marine aviation and supporting forces preparing for combat in Korea.

The landing disrupted North Korean supply and communication lines, supported the recapture of Seoul and helped relieve pressure on forces fighting from the Pusan Perimeter. Inchon demonstrated an enduring requirement: a Marine Corps Reserve trained and prepared to rapidly augment the Total Force when the Nation calls.

We Remember

📍 United States, Sept. 11, 2026

Among the many lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, Marine Forces Reserve remembers two of our own: Sgt. Maj. Michael S. Curtin and Gunnery Sgt. Matthew D. Garvey.

Both Reserve Marines with 6th Communication Battalion and New York City first responders, Curtin and Garvey answered the call when others needed them most. Curtin, a member of the New York Police Department’s Emergency Service Squad, died while rescuing people trapped in the World Trade Center’s North Tower. Garvey, a firefighter with FDNY Squad 1, helped evacuate thousands from the South Tower before it collapsed.

Their service reflects the enduring commitment of Reserve Marines to the Nation, both in uniform and in their communities. Today, we remember Curtin, Garvey and all those who were killed on Sept. 11, 2001, and honor the courage and sacrifice of those who responded.

We will never forget.

Reserve Mobilization Exercise 26 Tests Rapid Activation

Marines with Marine Forces Reserve participated in Reserve Mobilization Exercise 26 at locations across the United States, testing MARFORRES’ ability to rapidly activate, process, equip and move Reserve forces during a large-scale, short-notice mobilization.

RMX 26 examined the mobilization process to identify shortfalls and efficiencies before those processes are required during an actual response. Data collected during the exercise will inform future mobilization planning and readiness.

Tap the link in comments to read how RMX 26 tested MARFORRES’ ability to rapidly mobilize Reserve forces and what the exercise revealed about readiness.
