The Orleans Parish Communication District (OPCD) was established in 1982 to provide 9-1-1 service in he City of New Orleans. OPCD's initial responsibility was providing infrastructure to equipment to answer 9-1-1 calls. Since Hurricane Katrina the primary responsibility now includes the purchasing and maintenance of the building and equipment. The District has 14 personnel who provide financial, administrative, technical, training, public education and employee support to Police, Fire and EMS personnel. The District is governed by an 11 member Board of Commissioners.

Congratulations to Laura Lee-Sneeze on her well-deserved promotion to OPCD Assistant Operations Manager!

Laura's OPCD career began in 2008 as an EMS Dispatcher. Over the years to follow, her consistently high levels of professionalism, work ethic, & mentorship led to her promotion to Operations Supervisor in 2024. During her long tenure in service to our community, Laura has continually been a strong leader & change agent, demonstrating initiative, dedication, and a commitment to improving OPCD's overall operations.

Beyond excelling in the daily responsibilities of an Operations Supervisor, Laura has also been an even better coworker & supporter of everyone she works with. We are very proud of Laura's hard work and perseverance within OPCD and look forward to seeing her continue to grow & succeed in her new role as Assistant Operations Manager.

Due to a technical issue, some callers aren’t currently able to connect to the NOPD non-emergency line, 504-821-2222. Anyone having issues reaching 821-2222 should instead use this backup number: 504-539-3419.

There are NO issues with reaching New Orleans 911. This technical issue is limited to the non-emergency number, 821-2222.

Congratulations to OPCD Deputy Executive Director Teresa Thompson, who recently passed the NENA Summer 2026 ENP exam and is now a certified Emergency Number Professional!

This high-level NENA - National Emergency Number Association certification requires candidates to pass a rigorous 150-question, multiple-choice exam covering several core areas of emergency communications operations, including telecommunications and information systems. The exam also delves into other areas of 9-1-1 oversight and support, including organizational structure, employee management, and legislation.

Candidates like Teresa who successfully pass the ENP exam have demonstrated mastery of the comprehensive knowledge base required for emergency communications management. Join us in congratulating Teresa on her commitment to the 9-1-1 profession and on demonstrating her knowledge and expertise across so many critical areas of public safety management.

Advisory for Verizon customers in Orleans Parish: New Orleans 9-1-1 is up and running for all inbound emergency calls. Verizon customers who call New Orleans 911 will be able to reach a 911 operator with no problem; however, if a 911 operator needs to call you back, the Caller ID may display as an unfamiliar or unknown caller. So, for Verizon customers in Orleans Parish who may need to call 911, please be sure to answer any inbound call afterwards!

The issue is being investigated by phone company technicians. Again: New Orleans 9-1-1 Operations are 100% up & running, and there are no issues with calling 9-1-1.

21 years later, we remember the unprecedented disaster following Hurricane Katrina: The lives lost, the lives disrupted, and the lasting impacts upon our residents and first responders alike.

Among the many lessons learned from this tragedy was the need to have a 9-1-1 Center capable of remaining online & operational after many types of possible disasters, including major hurricanes. Since 2012, our New Orleans 9-1-1 team has answered millions of calls from our facility at 118 City Park Ave, a building & complex designed from the ground-up to withstand the unthinkable. Multiple redundant backups for power, data, emergency communications, and for the human needs of our staff, are all part of our perpetual emergency plans.

“Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst” is easy to say, but it hits a lot differently for a city that was largely destroyed in an avoidable disaster. We promise to continue to remain vigilant year-round to anything that may impact our ability to serve our City’s residents, responders, and visitors, even as we deal with the daily emergencies & personal disasters behind each 9-1-1 call.
