Fall Outdoor Safety
October means cooler trail walks and peak hunting season. Because hikers, dog walkers, and hunters often share the same public lands, a little extra awareness keeps everyone safe out there.
Here is how we can all enjoy the outdoors responsibly this season:
Brighten Up: Wear blaze orange or high-visibility gear, and put an orange vest or bandana on your dog too. Leave the brown and green camouflage at home.
Speak Up: Don't be silent on the trails. Chatting, whistling, or calling out helps let hunters know you are in the area.
Stick to the Trail: Stay on established paths where other trail users and hunters expect to see human movement.
Leash Up: Keep dogs on a leash and close by to keep them safe and prevent them from wandering into active hunting zones.
Know Before You Go: Check local park schedules and hunting season dates before heading out to pick the safest times and locations.
For Hunters: Always treat every fi***rm as if it is loaded, positively identify your target and what lies beyond it, and unload before crossing obstacles or stepping near vehicles and trails.
Let's keep our forests safe, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone this fall.
