THIS Saturday, October 31st at 11 am join us for "Or Give Me Death: An (Educational) Tour of the Historic Burying Ground," led by HHS's Tours & Interpretation Coordinator, Zack Veith!

Enjoy a special Halloween run and the final opportunity to experience a Revolutionary War-themed guided tour of our historic "Old Huguenot Burying Ground."

Visiting various gravestones associated with soldiers, a suspected Loyalist, and witnesses to history, "Or Give Me Death" will explore the diverse stories of the revolution through the final resting places of its participants. Drawing from archival records, staff will share stories from colonial funeral practices to local raids, while showcasing to guests the evolution of gravestones in New York and what they can tell us about the traditions of the European settlers along Huguenot Street. Appropriate for all ages.

Please note due to the nature of this location—a historic burying ground, with uneven, unpaved ground and close clusters of gravestones—this tour may not be accessible for everyone. Historic Huguenot Street aims to make its programs accessible to everyone, wherever possible, with understandable limitations given the historic nature of our grounds. For more information about the accessibility of this tour, please contact our Tours & Interpretation Coordinator at (845) 255-1660 x114. It is helpful to inform us in advance of your visit of any physical limitations that you or another member of your party may have so that we can ensure we are providing you with the best possible experience.

$20 Discounted Admission (for HHS members, seniors, students, active military personnel and their families, veterans, and kids 13-17)

For this we are thrilled to announce that thanks to our friends at Pestmaster Services of the Hudson Valley we will be offering Teal Pumpkin Treats at every one of our "Trick-or-Treat on Huguenot Street" stops! The Teal Pumpkin Project’s goal is to make Halloween fun for everyone by offering non-food treats to trick-or-treaters! 1 in 13 children have a food allergy, which can cause life-threatening allergic reactions. Food allergies are a disease, not a diet and they shouldn’t stop kids from enjoying Halloween! Since 2023, HHS has had one Teal Pumpkin station at the DuBois Fort, and it’s been a goal of ours to expand that to every station. Thanks to the generous support of Pest Master, it is finally happening! We can’t wait to see you this Saturday!

10/28/2026

Please note: There will be no regular guided tours running today, Wednesday, October 28th, there will be no 10:30AM or 12:00PM tours running tomorrow, Thursday, October 29th or Friday, October 30th, and there will be no 2:30PM or 3:00PM tours running on Saturday, October 31st due to groups and events on site. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Two hundred and fifty years ago, Roelof Josiah Eltinge’s life took a significant turn. Before that fateful October, Roelof and his younger brother Solomon signed the Articles of Association in 1775. This document was essentially a promise to the Continental Congress that the signers would follow the word and will of the Continental Congress. All heads of households were required to sign the Articles or be considered enemies of the “American cause.” The Continental Congress issued and enforced the acceptance of a new paper currency to fund the Revolution, going as far as passing resolutions to ensure the usage of this new currency or face imprisonment or exile. Roelof J. Eltinge signed his loyalty to the Americans, but as a store owner he was less than thrilled about this new issue of money not backed by gold/silver reserves.

When Esther Hasbrouck Wirtz attempted to buy goods using the newly issued paper money, Roelof refused it and offered her credit instead. Roelof’s refusal became known, and he was called to appear before the Committee of Safety. An entry from Roelof’s diary reads, “1776 October 26th I was brought before the Committee at Ann DuBois.” The sentencing took place at Ann’s home and tavern, which served as a makeshift meeting place for matters concerning the Committee of Safety. Roelof’s sentence is unclear, but thanks to his diary, we know he was imprisoned in Fishkill, New York, until December 8. He then was moved to several different imprisonment locations, lost his youngest and eldest daughters Jannetje and Rebecca, reunited with his brother while imprisoned, and wrote several letters to New Paltz. He was allowed to continue his parole at his home in New Paltz. One month after he refused to take the oath of allegiance, however, he was officially banished to British-controlled New York City.

Roelof J. Eltinge's story is continued in depth in HHS's online exhibit, Provincial Exile: Roelof J. Eltinge and Solomon Eltinge’s Banishment. Visit the link in our bio.

For this , we’re hitting the road!

Last night, our Tours & Interpretation Manager, Zachary Veith, delivered his “Six Feet Under Huguenot Street” program to the Hyde Park Historical Society 1821. Just in time for the spooky season, the audience learned about the Old Huguenot Burying Ground at HHS and the funeral practices of the early European colonists through the historic gravestones of several residents.

HHS offers a range of speaking engagements—from general histories of Huguenot Street to new research on Black Loyalists during the American Revolution— that can be delivered for your group, organization, or event! More information at the link in our bio!
