Our neighbors in Muskingum and Perry Counties are facing a significant recovery effort following the severe storms and widespread flooding that struck southeastern Ohio on August 11.
Muskingum County declared a local state of emergency, followed by Governor Mike DeWine issuing a state of emergency declaration for Muskingum and Perry Counties. The declarations allow additional state resources and personnel to be coordinated in support of local response and recovery efforts.
Some areas received approximately 5–8 inches of rainfall, resulting in rapidly rising floodwaters, flooded roads, homes, businesses and vehicles, and significant damage throughout the affected communities.
The response has required a tremendous effort from firefighters, EMS, law enforcement, emergency management, public works crews, volunteers and state resources. Ohio Army National Guard personnel and vehicles were deployed to assist with rescue and evacuation operations, while additional swift-water rescue resources were brought in to support local crews.
Now, New Philadelphia is answering the call.
The New Philadelphia Fire Department is sending six personnel to assist with the ongoing response and recovery efforts in Muskingum County.
These six members will join countless other public safety professionals working to support the communities affected by this disaster — helping with the difficult work that continues even after the water begins to recede.
Local 1501 is proud of our members and the New Philadelphia Fire Department for stepping up when our neighbors need us.
Stay safe, Muskingum County.
