Thank you to everyone who took the time to guess at our quiz last night! We asked what time of the day the most injuries or deaths are likely to occur in a house fire. The correct guess was (C), 11 pm to 7 am! And this is no doubt because many people are asleep during this time! (Interestingly, the time with the highest *number* of home fires is in the late afternoon and evening, when people are cooking dinner! But the frequency of injuries and deaths peaks during the night).

Which brings us to this: Studies and real-world firefighting have shown that closing your bedroom doors can make a huge difference in your safety if a fire starts in your home! Research shows that temperatures in a room with a closed door can be around 100 degrees, while the fire burns outside the room at over 1000 degrees F! A closed door also disrupts the flow of oxygen to a fire. It's such a simple thing to do: Close before you doze! (And make sure you have those smoke alarms working, too, of course!)

We're halfway through Fire Prevention Week, so we thought we'd give you a quiz! What time of day do you think is when the most injuries or deaths occur in house fires? Put your guess in the comments and stay tuned for the answer tomorrow! (Plus some more details on why we're asking this question!) What's your answer, A, B, or C?

Do you have a fire extinguisher in your home or business? You should! While the #1 priority in a fire is for everyone to get out safely, if a fire is small and contained, a fire extinguisher can be used to slow or even extinguish a fire before the fire department arrives. Always call 911 and ensure everyone is out safely as your first priority, but a small, multi-purpose fire extinguisher in your home can be easily used to slow a fire. Cooking is the leading cause of home fires nationwide, and an extinguisher can help if one starts! (Do NOT use water on grease! An extinguisher is what you need for a cooking fire involving grease!). For more tips on using fire extinguishers, check out the comment section.

On Day 2 of Fire Prevention Week, we want to talk about smoke alarms, and how important they are! They truly save lives. Make sure yours work. We mean that they REALLY work. Go check the batteries, test the alarms, and replace the batteries if needed.

Did you know? The risk of dying in a house fire is estimated to be 60% LOWER in homes with functional smoke alarms compared to those with no alarms or non-working alarms. And dead or missing batteries are a real problem. In fires where smoke alarms were present but failed to operate, almost 70% of them had missing, disconnected, or dead batteries.

Smoke alarms truly save lives! Do you have yours installed and operating fully?

October 4th through the 10th is Fire Prevention Week! And you know what they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, or something like that? We're firefighters, not doctors, but we know this is the perfect week to think about fire safety!

Did you know that on average we respond to a handful of structure fires every year in our response area, and one or two house fires every year? The risk of fires is very real right here in our own community but being prepared can make all the difference!

βœ… Have working smoke detectors
βœ… Have an escape plan, and talk with all your family members about it
βœ… Close your bedroom doors at night (we'll talk more about this later this week)
βœ…Practice safety in the kitchen and with power cords and chargers (and replace them if they're getting old!)
βœ… Call 911 in an emergency - we are here 24/7, 365 days a year, ready to respond!

10/03/2026

πŸŽƒ Make sure your Halloween plans this year include the live music, food, and fun at the New Salem Fireman's Ball! πŸŽƒ

βœ… TWO live music acts: Breaking Eight featuring Beni Paulson, and Brady Paulson
βœ… Adult costume contest, and adult beverages available
βœ… Kids games and kids costume contest
βœ… Silent auction and PRIZES
βœ… Food vendor
βœ… Supporting a local, all-volunteer fire department!

Don't miss it! Doors open at 6 pm October 31st at the New Salem Auditorium. Music starts at 8 pm sharp. Tickets can be purchased at the door, and will be available at area businesses in the very near future, too, stay tuned!
