New Waverly and MCESD #2 - Montgomery Fire Department Firefighters are currently assigned to the Woodward Fire.

The Woodward Fire started on September 11, 2026, in Schleicher County and was responded to by local fire departments. Texas A&M Forest Service was requested to provide assistance in the form of additional firefighters and heavy equipment at 2:29 pm and quickly responded. Texas A&M Forest Service is currently in unified command with local fire departments.

Aviation resources including Air Attack (AA), Large Air Tankers (LATs), and Single Engine Air Tankers (SEATs) were ordered to assist in suppression efforts and made beneficial drops to slow the fire’s progression.

Fire activity remained active in the evening and burnout operations were conducted on the right flank to reinforce existing roads. Forward progression was stopped around 7 pm and crews remained on scene through the night.

Today: Minimal fire behavior and smoke is being observed. Crews continue to engage in mop-up operations and mitigate any heat sources on the fire’s left flank. Dozers are continuing to widen and improve containment lines where needed while engines are providing water support for mop-up operations.

Fire and Weather Behavior: Hot and dry conditions will prevail today. Expect south to southeast winds 5 to 10 mph with occasional gusts around 15 mph. A minimum relative humidity (RH) is expected around 25 percent during peak afternoon hours. The RH should increase to around 55 percent by midnight and a maximum RH of near 95 percent by daybreak Sunday.

The NWFD’s Alltrack INC AT-50HD Wildland Engine is at home in the deep sand of South Texas. It’s paired with the Department’s Tactical Wildland Tender and crewed by a team of four New Waverly Firefighters.

Together, this unique combination resource is self sufficient and can go where conventional apparatus can’t, whether it’s the Eastern Piney Woods or the South Texas Brush Country.

In one recent wildfire, the Tender even took on a new role, functioning as a water truck to stabilize the access roads and allow additional teams to access the fire.
