In addition to the slice of colonial life on display last Saturday, we also held a dedication ceremony for a Liberty Tree. The Liberty Tree was a symbol of resistance to British tyranny during the American War for Independence. Trees in towns and cities were designated as Liberty Trees and become rallying sites for protests against Great Britain.

In honor of the 250th anniversary of American Independence, Liberty Trees were planted in a number of counties around Maryland. The Strawbridge Shrine was selected as the site for Carroll County's Liberty Tree earlier this year.

The tree planted at the Shrine is a Tulip Poplar. It is from a scion (that is, a tree that was detached from an original tree) from the Annapolis Liberty Tree. That means the tree planted at the Shrine retains the same genetic makeup as the original Liberty Tree.

Special thanks to Elizabeth Shatto, Executive Director for Heart of the Civil War, who gave an inspiring talk about the importance of the Liberty Tree. Thanks also go out to Dylan Orr, Maryland Forest Service, for overseeing the planting of the tree. And we thank the Shrine's Curator, Helen Kemp, for being an advocate to see the Strawbridge Shrine become the site of Carroll County's Liberty Tree.

Coming soon, it's the annual Strawbridge Shrine Advent Service. This year, we are offering two opportunities to worship in the Log meeting House. See the flyer below for details.

Because this is a popular event, we ask you to call our curator ahead of time to let us know you plan to attend.

May the blessings of the Advent season be yours as we prepare to welcome the newborn King.
