NYC Service was launched in April 2009 to lead the nation in answering President Obama’s national call to volunteerism. NYC Service aims to drive volunteer resources to six impact areas where New York City’s needs are greatest:
• Strengthening communities
• Helping neighbors in need
• Improving education
• Protecting our environment
• Increasing public health
• Enhancing emergency preparedness

Looking back at NYC Civic Corps orientation!

Over two weeks, our newest cohort of AmeriCorps members got to know one another, learned about program expectations, and prepared for the year of service ahead.

Through trainings on SMART goals, service journey mapping, and key skills in volunteer management, community outreach, and program development, members built a foundation for their roles. They also welcomed a special guest: AmeriCorps CEO Jennifer Bastress Tahmasebi!

Members put service into action through projects across the city, including the 9/11 Day of Service at the Intrepid Museum and a park cleanup with Bronx Special Kids during Community Exploration Day, an opportunity to explore the boroughs they’ll be serving.

With new skills, connections, and a shared commitment to service, our newest members are ready to make a difference across NYC.

Nonprofits power service programs across the city, and we had the chance to visit POTS in the Bronx, an NYC Service Civic Impact Fund recipient and 2026 Partnership Impact Award winner.

Whether it’s someone in need of a shower, haircut, or a safe place for their children to play while they complete a benefits application, every aspect of POTS’ programming helps people in the Bronx meet their basic needs and build a foundation for success. Every day, up to 60 volunteers stock shelves, serve meals, and connect neighbors with the tools to achieve self-sufficiency.

Thank you to the POTS team and all the volunteers who help our most vulnerable neighbors thrive.

Yesterday, NYC Service hosted the Building Careers in Service Summit, bringing together City leaders and SYEP interns for a day of mentorship, learning, and professional growth.

During the mentoring session, interns practiced their elevator pitches, strengthened their problem-solving skills, and received career guidance from City leaders.

We were also honored to hear from our guest speakers:

🔸DYCD Commissioner, Sandra Escamilla-Davies

Thank you to all of the mentors, mentees, and City leaders who dedicated their time to inspire and invest in the next generation of public servants.

Celebrating a year of service. 💙🎉
On Friday, we recognized the 130 NYC Civic Corps members who dedicated the last 10 months to strengthening communities across the five boroughs.

We're still tallying up the incredible accomplishments of this cohort, and we're proud to report that together with their host sites and supervisors, members served over 100,000 New Yorkers through direct service, capacity building, and community engagement.

Thank you to our incredible host sites and supervisors for mentoring the next generation of service leaders, and a special thank you to our National Service team for providing training, guidance, and unwavering support to our members throughout their service term.
