Bayard Rustin is a civil rights icon, best known for his pivotal role in helping to organize the 1963 March on Washington. Moving to New York in the 1930s to attend City College, Rustin developed radical politics and began organizing against racial segregation in the army and employment discrimination. Rustin led the A. Philip Randolph Institute, the AFL-CIO's African American constituency group, working to integrate and promote unions among Black Americans.

Due to a “moral cause” arrest early in his career, Rustin was publicly outed as a gay man. Discrimination over his sexuality often forced him to take a more background role in movement work. Later in his life, Rustin became a fierce advocate for q***r people across the globe, focusing on AIDs education and destigmatization in the 1980s.
