MOIA celebrated the Year of the Fire Horse 2153 at a Losar event hosted by Bhotekashi Samaj,a community organization serving Tibetan and Nepali-speaking New Yorkers.

During the event, our team shared information on Know Your Rights (KYR) with ICE, NYC’s Sanctuary City Law, and what to do if friends or family members are detained by ICE. We also distributed three multilingual resource booklets to more than 300 attendees.

MOIA is proud to make immigrant rights resources accessible in languages beyond the city’s top 10, including Tibetan and Nepali, so that more communities can stay informed and protected.

'Gu' means nine, and 'thuk' short form for thukpa is a soup dish made of nine ingredients 🍲 Each bowl of Guthuk contains an item or an item written on paper inside a bigger ball of dough. Last week, our office celebrated the diverse and vibrant immigrant communities of New York City by honoring their heritage through an Immigrant Enclave Illustration Series Exhibit.

In collaboration with community partners, we showcased 23 illustrations representing 23 different communities, including “Little Bhod-Tibet.” We were pleased to have some Tibetan community members join us, along with many other immigrant community leaders. On December 10, 1989, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet received the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his exemplary commitment to non-violence, tolerance, and universal compassion. Today, the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs commemorates the 36th Anniversary of the Conferment of Nobel Peace Prize Award which is a significant day for Tibetan New Yorkers who revere His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and follows his path. Our office takes inspiration from his leadership and commits to serve and lead with peace, non-violence, and compassion.
