Community Board 12-Manhattan is deeply saddened by the incident involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Marble Hill on October 8, in which a community member was injured by gunfire. We wish this victim a full and swift recovery. We are also profoundly disturbed that a 5-year-old child was present, and we hold that child and their family in our hearts. No child should be exposed to such violence.

Our Board does not tolerate this activity in our district or anywhere in our country. Although Marble Hill lies outside Community District 12, our neighborhoods share the same resources and experiences. We stand with Mayor Mamdani, Manhattan Borough President Hoylman-Sigal, Councilmember De La Rosa, and all of our elected partners in working to protect our communities from this threat.

* It is illegal for an agent to stop you because of your race, national origin, religion, s*x, or ethnicity.

On Monday, September 14th, the Board of Standards and Appeals (BSA) approved Zeta Charter School’s special permit application to construct a high school at 181st Street and Broadway.

CB12M conducted extensive reviews of the application through our Traffic & Transportation, Health & Environment, Youth & Education, and Land Use Committees. Following this process, CB12M opposed the application due to concerns about traffic, pedestrian safety, health and environmental conditions, and the potential impact on our local public schools.

We are disappointed by the BSA’s decision. As this project moves forward, we urge Zeta to work closely with CB12M, our community, and local stakeholders to address these concerns and prioritize the safety and needs of the surrounding community.

El lunes 14 de septiembre, la Junta de Normas y Apelaciones (BSA) aprobó la solicitud de permiso especial de Zeta Charter School para construir una escuela secundaria en 181st Street y Broadway.

CB12M realizó una revisión exhaustiva de la solicitud a través de nuestros Comités de Tráfico y Transporte, Salud y Medio Ambiente, Juventud y Educación, y Uso de Terrenos. Después de este proceso, CB12M se opuso a la solicitud debido a preocupaciones relacionadas con el tráfico, la seguridad peatonal, las condiciones de salud y medio ambiente, y el posible impacto en nuestras escuelas públicas locales.

Estamos decepcionados por la decisión de la BSA. Ahora que este proyecto seguirá adelante, instamos a Zeta a trabajar estrechamente con CB12M, nuestra comunidad y las partes interesadas locales para abordar estas preocupaciones y priorizar la seguridad y las necesidades de la comunidad circundante.

After years of delays, we are pleased to confirm that construction is scheduled to resume Wednesday, September 16th!

The Department of Design and Construction will be installing a catch basin on the corner of W 157th Street and Broadway. There is currently a 72 hour no curbside parking notice, that has began effective Tuesday, 9-8-26.

** Please be advised, this is a moveable operation. Please be observant of the barrels posted outside by the contractor in advance to identify impacted areas.

This past Friday, Community Board 12-Manhattan joined local elected officials and community leaders to denounce the events that took place on Dyckman Street this past Sunday following the Dominican Day Parade.
A large group of young people from outside the city came to our community to celebrate. What was intended as a celebration ultimately resulted in a tragic death and significant damage to private property.

Dyckman is a cultural hub, known citywide as an emblem of culture. It is also a reflection of a community that comes together, looks out for one another, and takes pride in its neighborhood.

After receiving information about the potential repeat of an unpermitted “planned takeover” in our community today, a meeting was convened with local stakeholders and city agencies. We are working together and have a plan in place to prepare for the influx of young people expected in the area and, most importantly, to help ensure the safety of our residents, businesses, and visitors.

Thank you to CM Carmen De La Rosa for organizing the press conference and to all of our elected officials Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal Adriano Espaillat State Senator Robert Jackson Assemblyman Manny De Los Santos, MSW (he/him/el) Assemblyman Al Taylor community leaders, and city agencies for coming together to address this issue. Our community deserves to celebrate its culture while also protecting the safety and well-being of everyone who lives, works, and visits here.
