As we’ve observed the way Room 7 friends move across different environments, it’s become clear there’s something about heights that draws their attention.

During their recent visit to the Paint Studio, every drip and gesture not only changed the whole surface of the canvas, but for Room 7, it became an impassioned mission to reach the white corners. To leave their trace in a place that was once out of reach.

A new school year is underway at TCS! ☀️🌿

We began with a week of teacher training and staff development — learning, reflecting, collaborating, and preparing for the year ahead.

Then we welcomed children and families for classroom visits and gathered at Rockefeller Park for our Community Picnic: reconnecting with old friends, meeting new ones, and welcoming our newest TCS families. 💛

And just like that, we’re nearly through our first week of school!

The classrooms are filling with questions, conversations, discoveries, play, and new relationships. We’re so happy to be back together and excited for all that this year will bring.

Welcome back, TCS! ✨

Children at TCS are very eager to come to the Atelier these days to make bags.
This is a fully autonomous curriculum for the 4/5 year olds!
They instruct one another
Step 1. Fold paper
Step 2: Decorate your paper
Step 3 : Add tape to the sides
Step 4: Add a handle
And Voilà you have a bag.

Our only question is: “Should we sell them on canal street?” 🤣

A snapshot of recent invitations in the Ericsson Atelier… 🌱

The 2s & 3s have been hard at work tending to seeds and sprouts. As greenery springs up all around us, these open-ended provocations have been an opportunity for the children to explore the tactility of these materials and to make connections between their classrooms, the outside world, and the Atelier!

Introducing tools such as syringes, droppers, and scissors has added an exciting challenge to the work of caretaking ✂️🪴

In the fall, we shared images of the children in Room 4 interacting with teacher-curated projections 💡🌈Since then, we’ve handed over this role and invited the children to investigate the workings of the overhead projector through hands-on experimentation. Through their play, the following inquiries have emerged: How does the projector function? What happens if we manipulate each of its parts?
Where does light come from?
In what ways does light interact with our classroom environment?

🚀The children of Room 3 have been fascinated by outer space since returning from Spring Break. Many of them watched the Artemis II mission over vacation and came back to class bursting with thoughts on space, the moon, and the Earth. These theories have continued to grow as the children explore loose parts, study the photos from the mission, and create their own “space drawings”. Where will this investigation lead us next?🚀

With the arrival of warmer days, Room 7 has been utilizing outdoor spaces. One ant discovery evolved into a tradition of searching for ants each time we went outside. Discussions of where ants must stay in the park, if ants are mean or nice, and questions about whether ants have arms has led to a love of our tiny neighbors at TCS.

Our love for ants displays the kindness children hold for the environment around them, no matter how small! We hope to keep up our work with ants throughout the end of the year.

What is a line? What makes a line?

The 2s have been exploring these questions through a variety of graphic media in the Ericsson Atelier. Their work makes us consider…

⚪️ How do the materials we offer contribute to satisfying mark-making experiences for young children?

⚫️ What happens when children are invited to work with quality artist-grade mediums (as compared to art supplies made for children)?

⚪️ What shapes, gestures, and meanings emerge in pre-literacy marks?

The children of Room 9 have been exploring city planning through a study of the Holland Tunnel rotary. After conducting field analysis and observing the space, they began imagining new possibilities and designing their own thoughtful ideas for how the area could be used.
