NYC business owners: An important update on storefront security grilles ⬇️
Proposed legislation before the New York City Council has resulted in DELAYED enforcement of visibility requirements for certain roll-down security grilles installed at storefront businesses located on sidewalks.
Under Local Law 75 passed by the previous Council in 2009, affected security grilles were scheduled to meet a requirement of at least 70% visibility by July 1, 2026.
As the current Council reviews new legislation that would modify how the law applies, DOB will hold off on enforcement while that process moves forward.
Thank you to Councilmember Althea Stevens for sponsoring Intro 0910-2026 and supporting continued review of the law and its intended purpose. We're looking forward to continuing to work with you on this.

This week’s motivation:
Malika Michaud is the owner of Same Time Tomorrow, a community-driven coffee shop in Harlem.
Like many first-time business owners, Malika found the process of setting up shop difficult and often frustrating. While she had the vision and the passion, she lacked the roadmap – until she reached out to the NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS).
Through SBS’s NYC BEST initiative, Malika found a partner in City of New York Government that didn’t just listen to her concerns, but took an active role in helping out, ensuring that she had all the resources, permits, and licenses she needed to open. She's one of 1,100 New Yorkers NYC BEST has helped save more than $6 million in fines and fees just this year alone.
As Malika put it, “there were moments I came very close to wanting to hire someone to handle the entire process for me – until NYC BEST. In those moments, NYC BEST became more than a resource. They checked in on me. Sometimes life would get overwhelming and one distraction would make me forget to send an email or respond to a message. And they would follow up. What they may not have realized is how much I needed that encouragement in those moments. It felt sincere. It felt considerate. It reminded me that someone cared whether this dream survived.”
Two weeks ago, Malika opened her doors for the first time, and months ahead of schedule.
Be like Malika. Call 888-SBS-4NYC, or visit nyc.gov/business today.
