People of all nations make NYC the greatest city on earth. No matter where you were born, when you're here, you're a New Yorker. Welcome home.

MOIA serves as a bridge between immigrant communities and City agencies and promotes policies that support the well-being of immigrants in New York City. Our office works towards the full and active participation of immigrant New Yorkers in the civic, economic, and cultural life of the City of New York.

Yesterday, in honor of , , , and Heritage Month, NYC agencies came together to share resources on worker rights and workplace protections for immigrant New Yorkers.

MOIA Commissioner Faiza Ali was proud to be joined by Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su, New York City Department of Consumer and Worker ProtectionCommissioner Levine, NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission Commissioner Valdiva, and NYC Department of Small Business Services Deputy Commissioner Chan and COS Khan to meet with immigrant hyperlocal media partners to share critical information on Workers’ Rights, Consumers’ Rights, and City resources to help immigrant workers, drivers, and entrepreneurs thrive.

Immigrants power New York and are central to NYC’s economy and workforce. Together, our teams reaffirmed the City’s commitment to economic justice for immigrant workers. Immigrant workers deserve dignity, respect, safe working environments, and fair compensation. Regardless of their immigration status, all New Yorkers have a right to report consumer or worker-related violations and complaints.

In addition to meeting with our IRW and RRLC partners these past weeks, MOIA Commissioner Ali recently connected with our exceptional partners across the three NYC library systems, including Queens Public Library, NYPL The New York Public Library, and Brooklyn Public Library spanning all five boroughs.

Through these educational institutions, which serve as MOIA’s English Learning Centers, immigrant New Yorkers can access English language classes with a civic focus. These classes empower immigrant New Yorkers by teaching them about their rights and the City’s resources and services available to every New Yorker, regardless of immigration status.

Thank you to the libraries and staff for fostering a safe, welcoming central space for immigrant neighbors to build their language skills for professional and personal growth. With your collaboration, these classes help New Yorkers feel welcome, build connections, and navigate essential city services.

At this afternoon’s Community and Ethnic Media Roundtable, Commissioner Levine announced the results of DCWP’s recent enforcement sweep of Immigration Assistance Service Providers (ISPs) throughout the five boroughs. After conducting over 270 inspections, Brooklyn was found to have the highest violation rate.

Also commonly referred to as “notarios,” ISPs are people or businesses that charge fees for any kind of immigration-related services. It's important for immigrant New Yorkers to know that ISPs are not lawyers, cannot provide legal advice or assistance, and are not typically accredited or recognized by the U.S. Department of Justice.
