NY-TF1 extends our deepest condolences to NYPD Detective Scott Mateyaschuk, his family, and the entire NYPD Emergency Service Unit K9 community on the sudden loss of their beloved partner, Tommy. Tommy was named after Police Officer Thomas Langone who gave the ultimate sacrifice September 11.

Detective Mateyaschuk and K9 Tommy served together as a FEMA Urban Search & Rescue Live Find K9 team with . As a Division Group Supervisor for IST Canine and the lead trainer for the NYPD Emergency Service Canine Unit, Scott dedicates his career to advancing the capabilities of working dogs.

At his side, Tommy exemplified the heart, intelligence, and relentless drive that define the very best of our search and rescue partners.

Tommy was not only an exceptional Live Find K9, but a loyal partner whose bond with his handler was evident to everyone who worked beside them. His work, spirit, and dedication will always remain part of the NY-TF1 and ESU K9 legacy.

Run free, Tommy. You were a special boy who will always be loved and remembered.

Last month we celebrated the of Detective Monika Grejniec, who has spent over two decades serving this city and this country with grit, heart, and excellence.
Β
Detective Grejniec joined the in 2005 and the elite ESU Canine team in 2013, quickly becoming a trusted, steady, and highly skilled presence within and the National US&R System.
Β
With her partner Tombo, Monika deployed to some of the most challenging disasters of our time including the Surfside Building Collapse, the Hawaii Wildfires, Hurricane Ian, Hurricane Helene, and the Texas Floods. They searched through treacherous terrain, floodwaters, and remote areas reached only by helicopter, doing whatever it took to find answers for families.
Β
Ask anyone in NY-TF1 or the FEMA National US&R System and they will tell you the same. Monika is operationally elite, relentless, humble, funny, and truly one of a kind. She also served as a certified evaluator, shaping the next generation of canine handlers.
Β
Monika, thank you for always going above and beyond for your teammates and for the communities we serve. Your legacy is woven into this Task Force and we are better because you were part of it. πŸ’™πŸΎ
