Project Hospitality For those in need: food, shelter, healthcare, mental health, rehab, education, legal aid, housing.🌟

Project Hospitality is a community-based, not-for-profit agency established in 1982 as an interfaith volunteer emergency response to the needs of homeless and hungry persons in Staten Island, New York. Incorporated in 1984, this volunteer community network implemented life-saving measures to meet the critical needs of homeless persons in the borough by providing emergency outreach, food, clothing, and shelter. The agency began with a simple food pantry and soup kitchen in 1982, opening the borough's first overnight voluntary church emergency shelter for homeless men in 1983, followed by a voluntary church-based women's shelter and year-round men's shelter in 1984. In 1985, Project Hospitality opened a trailer at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal to provide emergency and referral services to homeless persons who had congregated in the ferry terminal, the only heated public space on Staten Island. The outreach trailer represented the agency's first city contract, with the then NYC Human Resources Administration. It was through the intake and referral process of this initial drop-in center model that the agency was able to identify the multiple needs of homeless persons coming for help. Nearly all (97%) of the persons served were addicted to either alcohol or drugs, and 63% had a history of mental illness. Of 2,000 homeless persons served annually by the agency, 591, or 30% were HIV+. Having identified the special needs of mental health and chemical dependency treatment and HIV care for the population of homeless people served in Staten Island, Project Hospitality then developed a comprehensive continuum of care over the years to meet those special needs while developing models of housing and community-based clinical treatment and support services that would provide long-term assistance. The mission of Project Hospitality reflects that commitment to a continuum of care. Continuum of Care

Having identified the special needs for mental health, chemical dependency treatment, and HIV care for the population of homeless people we serve on Staten Island, Project Hospitality has developed a comprehensive continuum of compassionate care over the years to meet those special needs while providing the basics of food, clothing, and shelter and developing models of housing that would provide long-term support with the highest level of self-sufficiency possible. This continuum of care includes clinical care and a variety of housing models — emergency, transitional, and permanent supportive — to meet the needs of multiply diagnosed homeless persons. The multidisciplinary and integrated service delivery continuum of HIV support services provides a safety net for many clients with multiple needs in addition to living with AIDS. It provides our clients the support of a larger recovery community, where living with HIV is one factor among other disabilities and life stories.

ONE TABLE. ONE COMMUNITY.
An Interfaith Gathering Celebrating the Power of Hospitality

HUNGER DOESN'T TAKE A HOLIDAY.
Join Project Hospitality on Monday, November 23, 2026, as we launch a season of purpose, generosity, and community impact with a special gathering focused on one of the most pressing challenges facing our neighbors: hunger and food insecurity.

We invite friends, faith leaders, community leaders, partners, and supporters from across Staten Island to come together in a shared commitment to raising awareness, inspiring collective action, and supporting the individuals and families we serve.

Our recent op-ed, “Hunger Doesn't Take a Holiday,” emphasized that hunger is not seasonal. For far too many individuals and families, the uncertainty of where their next meal will come from is a daily struggle.

Our responsibility is not simply to respond to hunger today, but to build a community where food security is a reality for every household, every family, and every neighbor.

One Table. One Community. is a purposeful awareness experience. Across faiths and communities, guests will share a simple offering of soup, bread, and water—a symbolic reminder of the realities of hunger and food insecurity.

Together, we will examine the state of hunger globally and right here on Staten Island, raise critical funds to support Project Hospitality's mission, and explore how stronger partnerships and collective action can create lasting change.

This special gathering also marks the beginning of a powerful journey toward our Spring Gala, “The Power of Hospitality: Changing Lives, Strengthening Community,” on May 25, 2027. A journey rooted in compassion, strengthened by community, and dedicated to restoring hope and transforming lives.

ONE TABLE. ONE COMMUNITY. ONE SHARED RESPONSIBILITY.
