Brazilian modern design took shape in the mid-20th century amid a surge of industrial ambition and experimentation, as architects and designers sought new formal languages suited to mass production, emerging materials, and a rapidly urbanizing society. At the center of this, Oscar Niemeyer translated this moment into furniture that is fluid, structural, and human in scale, while introducing a new kind of structural tension. On the other hand, José Zanine Caldas rejected industrialization in favor of an ecological and vernacular approach, carving monumental works from salvaged tropical hardwoods that collapse the distance between nature, craft, and design.

See works by Oscar Niemeyer and José Zanine Caldas on view at Brazil Modern at 64 White Street, where the exhibition traces how this tension sharpened a distinct and enduring modern identity.

We are deeply saddened to share news of the passing of Pietro Derossi, visionary architect, designer, and co-founder of Gruppo Strum. Founded in Turin in 1966 with Giorgio Ceretti and Riccardo Rosso, Gruppo Strum became a defining collective of Italian Radical Design, creating bold, experimental works that questioned consumer culture and reimagined how design could shape society.

Derossi’s contributions are celebrated in SuperDesign: Italian Radical Design 1965–1975, a documentary and publication highlighting Italy’s most revolutionary design movement. His radical approach continues to influence and inspire generations of designers, architects, and thinkers.

Reflecting on his legacy, R & Company Principal and Co-founder Evan Snyderman shared, “I was fortunate to meet Pietro on several occasions with my dear friend and collaborator, Maria Cristina Didero, while researching and filming our SuperDesign project. Pietro was a major force in the Radical Design movement. His designs of Pratone, Puffo, and Torneraj are now iconic. What many don’t know is his role in managing the Piper discoteque in Torino. The Piper served not only as a place to be seen, but also as a place for social and political discourse among Italian youth at the time. It also hosted several groundbreaking exhibitions with artists such as Pistoletto, Piero Gilardi, and Gruppo 9999. His spirit and passion were a gift to us all.”

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Pietro Derossi’s family, friends, and colleagues, and are honored to celebrate his enduring legacy through our program and archives.
