The Conflicts of Interest Board is the independent New York City agency tasked with administering, enforcing and interpreting Chapter 68 of the New York City Charter, the City’s Conflicts of Interest Law, and Section 12-110 of the Administrative Code, the City’s Ann

You like social media, right? Of course you do, or you wouldn't be here. But can you tell us which social media actions are prohibited by Chapter 68, the City's conflicts of interest law? It can get tricky when the internet gets involved...

In this month's Ethical Times, we ask why, if a supervisor's "request" to engage in a political campaign is too coercive because of the power he holds over your employment, he can still ask you to sign that online petition to save his favorite TV show from cancellation.

ENFORCEMENT: Shortly after leaving DOE, a former School Improvement Specialist contacted her past DOE colleagues 41 times by email and video chat, in an effort to generate new business for the consultancy firm where she now works. In each email, she referenced her most recent interaction at DOE with the colleague; in the video conferences, she described her recently-vacated City position as giving her "unique insight".

When told her contact violated the one-year post-employment appearance ban, she self-reported to COIB and ceased these contacts, who issued a $5K fine.

This month's Puzzler is for all you music fans. The ones who can name songs based on vague ethics hints, an artist, and a year. The ones who listen to classic rock, ideally on vinyl. The ones who liked the Public Service Puzzler BEFORE it was cool.

(That last one's a trick: liking the Public Service Puzzler has ALWAYS been cool)
