Morning Spew: With Nothing Else Landing, Cuomo Tries Gutter Racism

With no desire to propose actual ideas, and with all their other lines of attack failing to land in the polls, the forces aligned against Zohran Mamdani have decided on an old and predictable strategy to close out the final days of the campaign: racism.
On Thursday morning, Andrew Cuomo laughed along to shock jock bigot Sid Rosenberg's suggestion that Mamdani would cheer "another 9/11," and added, "that's a problem."
Later that same afternoon, the former governor watched and nodded along as his newest campaign ally, Mayor Eric Adams, rattled off some garbage about "Islamic extremism."
"You see what is happening in other countries because of Islamic extremism, not Muslims," Adams said. "Those Islamic extremisms that are burning churches in Nigeria." (Sure, Mayor Adams called a press conference specifically to state that Cuomo is a "spoiled brat" and "a snake and a liar," but that was seven whole weeks ago.)
At the same time, a pro-Cuomo super PAC funded with a million dollars apiece from Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia and hedge fund baron Ricky Sandler began running an advertisement that slapped the words "Jihad on NYC" over Mamdani's face. And that was after Cuomo's own campaign posted and then deleted a jaw-dropping ad that featured an AI Mamdani eating rice with his hands, and a pimp, a guy who beats his wife, a drunk driver, and a Black thief wearing a kaffiyeh, all celebrating a Mamdani mayoralty.
Cuomo's loyal spokesman, Rich Azzopardi, told the New York Times that his boss didn't believe that Mamdani would actually celebrate "another 9/11," but when Cuomo himself was asked about it at his press conference with Adams, he pointedly didn't disavow the statement.
"That's the host. Go talk to the host," Cuomo said, blaming Rosenberg. As for that disgusting AI campaign video? Azzopardi blamed a "junior staffer" and told the Times it was posted "in error." (Remember when Cuomo's campaign blamed their Chat GPT-riddled housing plan on a one-armed man? It's incredible how the former governor somehow isn't responsible for any of the mistakes his campaign makes!)
Powerful centrist New York Democrats — actual Democrats who hold public office, not washed "independents" who are angling for a Newsmax podcast or a job in Albania — came to Mamdani's defense. Governor Kathy Hochul responded to Cuomo's comments on X, saying "it's time to get out of the gutter." Congressman Dan Goldman, who has still not endorsed Mamdani, called Cuomo's pivot "naked Islamophobia." Congressmen Ritchie Torres and Gregory Meeks also condemned the rhetoric.
Mamdani himself responded by calling Cuomo's words "disgusting" and "racist," and his campaign announced that he'll be giving a speech "on Islamophobia" outside a mosque at 1 p.m. today.
Back in 1977, when Mario Cuomo was running for mayor against Ed Koch with the help of his son Andrew, he was told by a reporter that people connected to his campaign were trying to dig up dirt on Koch about his sexuality, and use it to smear him.
"Oh Christ," the elder Cuomo said. "Holy Mother of God. I'm so … I'm so … disappointed."

"I am a founding member of J Street, a Z*, pro-peace organization that supports a two-state solution & opposes the Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions movement. I differ with some of Mamdani's views about the future for IṣӷȧęIis & ᑭᗩᒪᗴ𝓢TIᑎians, including his failure to vocally support a two-state solution. But one doesn't have to agree with all of his views about the Middle East to conclude that he is the best candidate for mayor," writes Viktor Kovner, who notes that "Mamdani seems like a candidate much more aligned with Jewish perspectives on Israel than Cuomo, who joined one of Netanyahu’s legal defense teams pro bono": if even a (liberal) Z* like Victor Kovner can vote for Mamdani, the better headline for this Forward op-ed should be not "Jews are worried about Zohran Mamdani. Here's why they shouldn’t be" but "Z*" are worried — at least the more rabid & irrational Z*~!

"Professor David Miller () has won his case against the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) at Westminster Magistrates Court — a major victory for academic freedom and the right to critique Iṣӷȧęli apartheid.
