United Nations Police - UNPOL

Police Adviser Faisal Shahkar visited Viet Nam this week to meet with national police authorities to discuss the emerging police-contributing country’s growing participation in United Nations peace operations. During the three-day trip, Comm’r Shahkar met with H.E. Senior Lieutenant General Luong Tam Quang, Deputy Minister of Public Security, and the Office for Peacekeeping Directorate Board, to review Viet Nam’s contribution of individual police officers serving in UNISFA, UNMISS and at United Nations Headquarters in New York. They also took the opportunity to explore how Viet Nam can play a larger role in United Nations peacekeeping in the future.

During the visit, the Police Adviser visited Viet Nam’s Center for Training and Professional Development No. 1 to attend the launch of the country’s first formed police unit which will eventually be evaluated by United Nations police experts for future deployment to a United Nations peace operation. The drill showcased public order management exercises, including riot control, crowd management and close protection.

On this International Women’s Day, the United Nations Police Division pays tribute to the women police officers, hailing from 73 countries, who serve under the blue flag. The participation of women police in United Nations field missions is critical to operational efficiency and has a direct impact on the sustainability of peace.

Today, women comprise 19.6 per cent of the 7,895 United Nations Police Officers ( ) deployed to eight United Nations Peacekeeping Operations (UNMIK - United Nations Mission in Kosovo, UNFICYP, , United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) , United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) , United Nations Mission in the DR Congo - Monusco , Mission des Nations Unies au Mali - MINUSMA, and MINUSCA) and three Special Political Missions ( United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia - UNSOM , , and UNITAMS - United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan ). Women also represent one third of the Individual Police Officers deployed to the field. In addition, five heads of United Nations Police Components are women.
