Today is !

For the world’s most vulnerable countries, food insecurity remains a major challenge.

This year’s theme, “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow", makes it clear: transforming food systems requires innovation, investment and partnerships that reach those who need them most. This means tackling interconnected challenges across our food systems, reducing food loss, strengthening resilience and delivering on commitments such as the Food Stockholding Mechanism.

Our recent Feasibility Study on the Operationalization of the Food Stockholding Mechanism for the LDCs reinforces the urgency of transforming food systems, highlighting how climate shocks, conflict and economic instability continue to erode resilience, underscoring the need for more predictable and effective responses to food emergencies.

For Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), efficient and resilient transport systems are essential for strengthening competitiveness and connectivity to regional and global markets.

Today in Astana, Kazakhstan - UN-OHRLLS joined partners for a Regional Dialogue on Advancing the Awaza Programme of Action (APoA) under the theme: Building a Professional and Resilient Road Transport Industry for Greater Connectivity and Competitiveness.

Co-organised with the International Road Transport Union (IRU) and the UN Resident Coordinator Office in Kazakhstan, the dialogue brought together governments, UN and development partners and industry leaders to advance practical solutions for trade facilitation, regional connectivity and professional excellence in road transport and logistics.

Discussions focused on translating the APoA into action, including through more efficient transit systems, harmonised regulation, policy and regulatory reform, stronger professional standards and human capital development.

Addressing the Global Workshop on the Participation of Landlocked Developed Countries (LLDCs) in the Regime of the Area and the Benefit-Sharing Mechanism under The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in Bolivia, our Under-Secretary-General and High Representative Rabab Fatima called for the rights recognised under UNCLOS to translate into meaningful participation and equitable benefits for LLDCs, supported by the Awaza Programme of Action (APoA) through science, technology and innovation, research partnerships, capacity-building, training and technology transfer.

Her message was clear: we must bring UNCLOS and APoA together and translate commitments into action.

Today, UN-OHRLLS presented seven reports of the UN Secretary-General to the Second Committee of the General Assembly under the agenda item on groups of countries in special situations.

The first report shows how the Doha Programme of Action (DPoA) is driving sustainable development in Least Developed Countries (LDCs), from graduation support and resilience-building to food security, digital connectivity and trade diversification. It also makes clear that progress must be accelerated and backed by adequate, predictable and sustained financing.

Two related reports highlight practical tools for DPoA implementation: a proposed Food Stockholding Mechanism to strengthen LDC preparedness and response to food emergencies, and the UN Technology Bank for the Least Developed Countries, which is helping countries identify and deploy technology solutions while building capabilities in areas such as digital transformation, cybersecurity and AI for climate-smart agriculture.

For Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), four reports focused on implementing the Awaza Programme of Action (APoA), while calling for faster action on connectivity, infrastructure, trade, food security, climate resilience and productive capacities. They also examined the feasibility of the suggested Regional Agricultural Research Hubs and a dedicated Infrastructure Investment Finance Facility, while identifying the institutional support needed across the UN system to deliver results for LLDCs.

The seventh report underscores that realizing the ambitions of the Awaza Programme will require a stronger UN-OHRLLS, more coherent UN system-wide support, expanded partnerships and adequate, predictable and sustained resources.

Together, these reports make a strong case for continued investment in the people and countries that need it most. With stronger partnerships and sustained action, we can ensure that no country and no person is left behind.

For many Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), agriculture remains a cornerstone of economic development, employment and food security.

The Awaza Programme of Action (APoA) highlights the need to strengthen productive capacities, build climate resilience and modernize agriculture across LLDCs. The Agricultural Research Hubs envisoned by the APoA, can play a critical role in this effort by connecting farmers with innovation, climate-smart practices, improved technologies and market opportunities. When farmers gain access to the tools, knowledge and partnerships they need to succeed, entire communities benefit.

This story from Malawi demonstrates this.

Last week, UN-OHRLLS participated in a High-level Dialogue marking the 5th Anniversary of the Global Development Initiative (GDI), held during the high-level week of the UN General Assembly.

In remarks delivered on behalf of Under-Secretary-General and High Representative Rabab Fatima, UN-OHRLLS welcomed the GDI’s contribution to advancing sustainable development and acknowledged its valuable support for vulnerable countries; Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

With less than four years remaining to achieve the 2030 Agenda, UN-OHRLLS underscored the need to move toward sustained and transformative impact, including through investments in productive capacities, resilient infrastructure, technology, human capital and continued South-South cooperation.

The Africa Mid-term Review of the Doha Programme of Action (DPoA) reaffirmed the urgent need to translate commitments into concrete results for Africa's Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

Discussions highlighted the importance of investing in people, advancing structural transformation, harnessing science, technology and innovation, strengthening trade and regional integration, building climate resilience, and supporting sustainable graduation.

The message from Addis Ababa was clear: the second half of the DPoA decade must be marked by faster action, greater ambition and renewed international support.
