In the 1970's, a group of citizens, now known as Friends of Blue Heron Park, lobbied for the creation of a protected natural area on Staten Island's south shore. In 1984, as a result of their work and dedication, 155 acres were designated by the city as parkland. In 1998, Blue Heron Nature Center opened its doors to the public.
