We were recently informed and excited to share that the Puerto Rican & Latino Studies Department will be receiving a tenured track senior faculty hire!

Thank you to all those who organized with us, signed the petition, and attended the speak out demonstration. Through our collective efforts as a community, we gave the Brooklyn College Administration no choice but to listen to and meet our demands for a campus that can better serve us.

"I very much appreciate your concern about PRLS. I am pleased to announce that the College has allocated a new tenure track senior faculty line to the department. We believe that this decision responds to the department’s most pressing needs at this time. Thank you again."

While this is a great victory, know that as a student body we must continue to make our presence felt on campus. ¡La lucha Sigue! 🇵🇷

On Monday September 12th we stood in solidarity with the Puerto Rican & Latino Studies Department to speak out against the Brooklyn College administration's decision to deny them a senior tenured track professor hire, and demand that CUNY better support our ethnic studies programs.

Club president Christopher Arias opened up the discussion with our clubs history of organizing on campus, encouraging us to dare to struggle. Other PRA members voiced how the lack of support negatively affected their academic experience and spoke to the empowerment located within our communities.

Thank you to all the students, faculty, staff, community, and council members for participating and being a part of this growing coalition to demand more for our people. We as an organization take pride in using our voices to help those in need and this fight is not over yet. There will be more demonstrations, more awareness, and more voices heard in the near future.

Thank you to every person who came out to support, signed petitions, and spread the word around. Know that this is just the beginning and we look forward to seeing you again as we move onward this semester.

PRA has had a close relationship of over 50 years with the Puerto Rican & Latino Studies department. This semester the administration has denied the department the ability to hire a tenured track profesor, which is just the most recent decision of many in which Latino Studies had been historically underfunded and unsupported.

PRLS needs an Afro-Latinx Studies senior hire with a bold research agenda. NYC has largest Afro-Latinx community in the country. Why is that ethnic studies, which represents our bipoc and Latinx communities is treated this way? Why is our quality of education and access undermined? If these issues concern you as it does us please come join us to speak out, its your voice that can make a change in our community. See you there!
