I Challenge Myself empowers youth by providing safe, engaging, and enriching experiences that foster academic success, healthy lifestyles, leadership, and lifelong resilience. In February 2005, I Challenge Myself began an ambitious journey based on a simple notion: to design physical fitness challenges (including a 1-day 100-mile bike tour) that allow public school students in high-poverty schools to experience personal and group success, to strengthen their bodies, develop a greater sense of confidence in their fitness skills and ability to persevere. I Challenge Myself’s mission is to encourage and support New York City public school students to embrace challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, to develop healthy lifestyles and prepare for college and the workforce.

Wheels up! 🚴‍♀️✨ Last Friday, our Ride Ready Girls had the amazing opportunity to welcome guest speakers from Major Taylor () Development Team and the New York Cycle Club (). They shared their passion for cycling and gave our students a inspiring look into what it’s like being part of NYC’s vibrant cycling community, especially as women in the sport.

Huge thanks to our visitors for inspiring the next generation of riders. 💛

When leadership inspires impact! ✨

Quentin Ball set out to tackle the NYC Triathlon, drawing inspiration from the very students she supports every day. After swimming 0.9 miles, biking 12.4 miles, and running 2.5 miles, she crossed the finish line with a purpose!

In honor of her incredible feat, Board Member Aya DeSimone donated $2,500 to help keep our youth fitness and empowerment programs thriving.

For Hispanic Heritage Month, we are proud to spotlight Patricia Gonzalez, Associate Program Director, whose commitment and pride in her roots continue to inspire our community and strengthen the work we do every day. See what she has to say about her heritage:

Q: What are you most proud of this Hispanic/Latine Heritage Month?

A: I am most proud of being Dominican and of the culture I come from. I love my country, our food, our music, the way we speak, and especially the way Dominicans can turn almost any moment into a celebration when we are together. Even after living in New York for 20 years, I still carry so much of the Dominican Republic with me. I’m proud of where I come from and the values and traditions that have shaped me.

Q: How has your culture or background shaped who you are today?

A: Being Dominican has taught me to find happiness and make the best out of any situation. Growing up with my culture has shown me that no matter what is happening, there is always a reason to come together, laugh, eat, dance, and celebrate life.

As a Dominican woman, my culture has also given me a strong sense of determination. When someone tells me I can’t do something, that I’m not strong enough, or that something isn’t meant for me—especially when those expectations come from men—it motivates me even more. Instead of allowing those words to stop me, they make me want to work harder and prove that I can do what I set my mind to.

Q: Who is a Hispanic historical figure, community leader, or family member who inspires you?

A: A Hispanic historical figure who inspires me is María Teresa Mirabal of the Dominican Republic. I admire her resilience, courage, and willingness to continue fighting for what she believed in, even when she knew she was putting herself in danger. She stood up for what she believed was right despite the risks, and that strength is something I really admire.
Her story reminds me that sometimes doing what is right requires courage, and that you should not give up on what you believe in simply because it is difficult or because someone tells you that you cannot do it. Her strength as a Dominican woman is something that continues to inspire me.

Pedal power meets purpose! 🚴✨

Our team had an incredible time connecting with world-record ultra-cyclist Jack Thompson () at the Specialized Retail Store () on the Upper West Side during his Ride the Nation Challenge!

Jack is currently riding across all 50 states, 60+ days, cross-country, to raise funds and awareness for Outride's mission () of improving youth brain health and expanding access to cycling.

We loved sharing the mission of I Challenge Myself and highlighting how our youth cycling programs empower students through fitness, resilience, and community. Good luck on the rest of your journey, Jack! 🚲💨

Grateful for incredible corporate partners like PwC ! 🎨✨

On Friday, a team of dedicated PwC volunteers came together at UHHS to paint a vibrant community mural and distribute supplies to local families.

At I Challenge Myself, we know that transformative community work relies on strong partnerships. Thank you to everyone at PwC who showed up, rolled up their sleeves, and helped create a brighter, more inspiring space for our students and community members.
