Today marks an extraordinarily significant day in our history: February 3, 1870, when the 15th Amendment was ratified. This pivotal amendment granted Black men the right to vote, a monumental step toward equality in our democracy. However, we must acknowledge the harsh reality that followed. Despite this constitutional promise, Southern states employed poll taxes, literacy tests, and even threats of violence to systematically disenfranchise Black voters.

It wasn’t until the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965—almost a century later—that the true spirit of the 15th Amendment began to be realized. On this day, we honor the unsung heroes of the civil rights movement who fought tirelessly for voting rights and laid the groundwork for future generations. Their courage and resilience remind us that the struggle for justice and equality is ongoing. Let us continue to stand in solidarity and ensure that every voice is heard and every vote is counted.
