The Navy League has provided a powerful voice for a stronger sea service to Congress and to the American people. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S.

The Navy League of the United States was founded in 1902 with the encouragement of President Theodore Roosevelt. The Navy League has grown into the foremost citizens’ organization to serve, support and stand with all the sea services – the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S.-flag Merchant Marine.

Last week, the New York Council Navy League hosted a National Security Briefing to pilot a conversation on the topic of military readiness. We held a panel discussion that included representatives from the United States Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Army, Air Force and, for the first time, Space Force.

We would like to thank our Military Fellows from the Council on Foreign Relations for their participation at our event this month. We look forward to more productive conversations on the topic of Military Readiness taking place later this year.

The New York Council Navy League is proud to reveal the new USCGC Vincent Danz Crest!

The crossed officer’s sword and chief petty officer’s cutlass symbolize the foundational unity between the officer corps and enlisted personnel. This pairing represents mutual respect, shared responsibility, and seamless teamwork that are essential to the crew’s collective strength and mission success. A scalloped partition evokes the movement of water, defining the base of the shield as a representation of New York Harbor and illustrating the purpose of the cutter to protect and serve from the sea.
Below this, a display of stars taken from the ribbon of the NYPD Medal of Honor, a commendation Danz received posthumously in the wake of the attacks, highlights service and sacrifice as the central force in the life of Danz. The darkness of the top half of the shield represents the gravity of this attack — topped by two proudly standing pallets resembling the Twin Towers as a pronounced foil to this darkness. Weaved between them are two red chevronels, referencing Danz’s rank as a Petty Officer 2nd Class, and expressing his legacy as forever connected to the heroism that the atrocities of that day necessitated. The chevronels are pointed upward, emulating a valiant forward momentum towards danger — a hallmark that Vincent Danz exemplified.

Officer Danz died responding to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001. The Council is proud to have participated in the naming ceremony for the cutter in November 2019.
