Helping someone find a home is one part of the work. Helping them stay housed is another.

At CUCS’s Sydelle residence, ongoing eviction prevention workshops give residents a space to discuss housing concerns and learn about resources that can help them maintain their housing when emergencies arise. These conversations are part of CUCS’s continued support for residents as they build stability in their homes.

A stable home is the starting point.
Opportunities to connect, get creative and enjoy time with neighbors are part of feeling at home, too.

This Emotional Wellness Month, we’re sharing a look at life at CUCS’s Kingsbridge Heights Residence in the Bronx. From making tofu empanadas and decorating pumpkins to gathering for an end-of-summer carnival, residents have been learning, creating and spending time together.
The team’s focus on residents’ wellbeing extends beyond individual services.
It includes bringing neighbors together and giving residents and staff more opportunities to get to know one another.

Leading a team means knowing how to give useful feedback, delegate effectively and have difficult conversations.

We recently launched a Leadership Development Program for our Senior and Executive Leadership team, facilitated by Knights Consulting. Through the program, our leaders will strengthen these skills, build inclusive and equitable leadership practices, and support one another in putting what they learn into practice.

It’s an investment in the people who lead our teams and in how CUCS works together to deliver the best care for New Yorkers.

All week long, we’ve been recognizing case managers across CUCS and sharing what makes their work rewarding. We’re closing our National Case Management Week spotlights with Melina Ramirez, a case manager at the Hannigan. Melina has built lasting relationships with the seniors on her caseload. She helps them navigate the healthcare system, advocates for their individual needs and values being someone they can consistently turn to.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is helping seniors navigate the complexities of the healthcare system and advocating for their individual needs,” Melina says.

Thank you, Melina, for the care and dedication you bring to your work at the Hannigan.

And to all of CUCS’s case managers, thank you for listening, following through and helping people get the support they need, every day of the year.

Join us in thanking them in the comments!

For Divante Hawkins, helping a client find a home is his proudest moment at CUCS. Making sure the client has support after the move matters to him, too.

Our National Case Management Week spotlights continue with Divante, a case manager at Paul’s Place who has been with CUCS for almost a year and a half.
When a client faced repeated barriers to securing an apartment, Divante advocated for him and enlisted his team’s help. He explained what the client could manage independently and where he needed support. They kept pursuing options until he secured a home.

Thank you, Divante, for your dedication to the people you serve and all you do at Paul’s Place.

Join us in thanking Divante and the CUCS case managers who make this work possible. Leave a shoutout in the comments!

What will 1920 Turnbull mean for the people who live there? A stable home, access to care and support for what comes next.

At this week’s groundbreaking in the Soundview section of the Bronx, CUCS President & CEO Dawn M. Pinnock, shared how the new affordable and supportive housing development will expand CUCS’ services in the borough, helping residents stay housed, pursue employment and look to the future with greater confidence and hope.

We’re grateful for our partnership with and Strada Ventures LLC on this project, and we’re also thankful for NYC Council Member Amanda Farías, Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, , and the New York City Housing Development Corporation (HDC) for helping make it all possible.

Our National Case Management Week spotlights continue with Melanie Klugman, a case manager at The Christopher who joined CUCS in 2024.

For Melanie, advocating for residents also means helping them build the skills to advocate for themselves. “My favorite part of my job is not only advocating for my clients but also helping people learn the skills to do so themselves. It is so satisfying to be on a team with our tenants working to accomplish their goals,” Melanie says.

She values CUCS’s commitment to self-determination and the opportunity to continue developing her own skills. A recipient of a DOHMH scholarship, Melanie is currently attending Hunter College to earn her master’s degree in social work.

Thank you, Melanie, for supporting residents at The Christopher!

We’ll be sharing more CUCS case manager spotlights throughout the week.
