DSA Tech Action was proud to stand with Councilwoman Shahana Hanif in support of her bill on biometric tracking technologies. We are facing an unprecedented expansion of mass surveillance of New Yorkers, fueled by facial recognition tools, biometric databases, and large scale data sharing agreements. Biometric data collection has no boundary, information can be repurposed beyond its original intent, and surveillance becomes normalized. It’s time to ban the scan in New York City.

In the pandemic, the internet became essential for school, work, and connecting with loved ones. Internet service revealed itself to be terrible in many parts of NYC. We need a high speed public fiber network for all now!

Bridging the digital divide by offering low cost, low speed plans is an insult to BIPOC communities who’ve been ignored by private ISPs. Everyone deserves high speed fiber, and it is NYC’s responsibility to provide it.

😡 Wondering why we don’t have fiber all over NYC? That’s because ISPs like Verizon violate their franchise agreements while taking public money: it’s time to end corporate giveaways and develop a public network

😡 In NYC 46% of people living in poverty don’t have broadband - if you are homeless, shelters don’t provide internet to find a job or access critical services. NYC must provide because private companies won’t.

In a year where everything is remote, internet access is a vital utility. Yet we still don’t have widespread, high quality broadband in the world’s richest country’s richest city. We need !

In NYC, internet remains strangled by corporate monopolies of union-busting companies who provide poor service for high prices. It’s time to break these monopolies and provide internet by the people, for the people. Join our campaign launch May 7th, 4:30pm!
