We want to remind you all of the Safe and Healthy Homes VISTA Project, making our work possible through the generous support of the Corporation for National and Community Service for the past three years!

The Safe and Healthy Homes Project aims to provide vital capacity-building support to low-income tenants residing in various forms of privately owned, federally-assisted housing developments. Our mission is clear: to empower tenants, enhance community well-being, and address critical challenges such as affordable housing preservation, health, safety, and COVID-19-related concerns.

Through this project, we will focus on four key objectives:

Increase Tenant Capacity: Empowering tenants with the skills and resources they need to advocate for affordable housing preservation.
Improve Health and Safety Outcomes: Promoting healthier and safer living environments within communities.
Raise Awareness of Rights and Responsibilities: Ensuring that residents are informed and empowered to assert their rights and fulfill their responsibilities as tenants.
Address COVID-19 Challenges: Supporting communities in adapting to and recovering from the health, safety, and affordability challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

To achieve these goals, we are excited to announce the placement of 15 VISTA Tenant Organizers at 12 local tenants' rights organizations nationwide. These dedicated individuals will work closely with tenants living in HUD multifamily housing in their respective communities. Their roles will involve facilitating the formation of strong tenant associations, identifying community needs, and advocating for change by engaging property owners and other stakeholders.

Here are the current Safe and Healthy Homes Host Sites:

Arkansas Community Initiative: Little Rock, AR
Durham CAN: Durham, NC
Friends of Parkside: Detroit, MI

Welcome to the official National Alliance of HUD Tenants (NAHT) page!

Founded in 1991, NAHT stands as a beacon of empowerment and advocacy for tenants residing in privately owned multifamily HUD-assisted housing across the United States. We are thrilled to extend our warmest greetings to all tenants, organizers, and allies who join us in our mission to champion the rights and well-being of HUD-assisted housing residents.

At NAHT, we believe in the power of unity and collective action. With over two decades of dedicated service, we have been at the forefront of advocating for the interests of lower-income families, ensuring their voices are heard and their rights are protected. Our diverse membership encompasses tenant-controlled alliances representing approximately 1.2 million households, reflecting the rich tapestry of our nation's communities.

Our core values drive our work:

Preservation and Improvement of Affordable Housing: We are committed to safeguarding affordable housing options and advocating for policies that support the maintenance and expansion of housing opportunities for all.

Protection of Tenants' Rights: We stand firm in our dedication to upholding tenants' rights, fighting against discrimination, and ensuring fair treatment for all residents.

Empowerment and Community Engagement: We empower tenants through education, organizing, and advocacy, fostering strong community ties and amplifying tenant voices.

Promotion of Resident Control and Ownership: We advocate for models of resident control and ownership, empowering tenants to have a meaningful say in the management of their housing communities.

Improvement of Quality of Life: We work tirelessly to enhance the overall quality of life for residents, addressing issues such as safety, maintenance, and access to essential services.

Accountability and Transparency: We hold HUD accountable to its constituents, advocating for transparency, responsiveness, and policies that prioritize the needs of HUD-assisted housing residents.

As we embark on this journey together, we invite you to join us in our efforts to create positive change and build thriving, empowered communities. Together, we can make a lasting impact and ensure every tenant has a safe, affordable place to call home.

Welcome to NAHT – where tenants speak for themselves, and together, we make our voices heard.

Welcome!
