The 117th FDNY Memorial to those firefighters lost in the line of duty. The pipes were followed by thousands of firefighters in uniform. The NYSHFCA is thankful to be invited each year. Memorial is at 100th and Riverside NYC New York City Fire Department (FDNY)

Tomorrow, the FDNY will be honoring the heroic, life-saving members at our Annual Medal Day Ceremony. Firefighter Artur Podgorski will receive the Chief of Department Peter J. Ganci Jr. Medal and the NYS Honorary Fire Chiefs Association Medal for his role at the high-rise fire in Midtown Manhattan in November of 2022. Firefighter Podgorski was lowered on a life-saving- rope from the 21st floor as heavy smoke billowed from the windows over the heads of the victims trapped below. He was able to grab hold of one of the victims and they were lowered to the floor below to safety. “I looked out the window for like for a split second and I just saw the smoke and the people out the window and that’s like right before I went out. There wasn’t enough time to process emotions. We were all making sure that everything was going to be all right, making sure the knot was there. We were more worried about the rope than how high we were at the moment,” said FDNY Firefighter Artur Podgorski.

Earlier this week, the New York State Honorary Fire Chiefs Association awarded scholarships to 24 FDNY members enrolled in college level classes. The FDNY is grateful for the generosity from NYSHFC President Glenn Zagoren and Vice President David Gold, for supporting our members pursuing educational opportunities.

We were very proud to be presenting the 2023 FDNY Scholarships. Thank you to Metropolitan Commercial Bank and their support. We presented 26 $3000 scholarships so our bravest can also be our smartest. We thank Chief Hodgens and Chief Esposito for their support.
