On Workers’ Day, we honour the dedication and resilience of workers across South Africa, especially those who nourish and uplift our schools and communities every single day. From the Food Mamas who prepare each meal with love and care, to the teachers who see firsthand the difference a daily meal makes — every role matters. At The Lunchbox Fund, we’re reminded that dignified work and proper nutrition go hand in hand. When children are nourished, they can learn, grow, and one day step confidently into the workforce themselves. As Cook Lorcadia M from Kids Hope Daycare shares: “You can’t beat the feeling of seeing their excitement when the food arrives! I feel like a hero providing something that brings them this much joy. A celebration of South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994—and the hard-won freedom for all. At The Lunchbox Fund, we believe true freedom means no child has to learn on an empty stomach. Because when children are nourished, they can grow, focus, and thrive. Good health starts with good nutrition. At The Lunchbox Fund, we make sure every meal is packed with essential vitamins and minerals—fueling children to learn, grow, and thrive. Because our meals do more than fill tummies—they support real, lasting health outcomes. And yes… they’re delicious too. As Merriam M., a cook at Johannes Kannada Primary, shares: “Our children line up for porridge in their numbers—even in the rain. Many have gained weight, and their performance in class has improved.”

The latest unemployment figures show just how tough things are for families across South Africa. With many parents struggling to put food on the table, school meals have never been more important. Our nutrition program doesn’t just feed children, it boosts learning, reduces absenteeism, and eases the pressure on families facing food insecurity. For many learners, a school meal is the most reliable food they get all day.

Not everything we do at The Lunchbox Fund is simple.

Behind every meal delivered, there are countless moving pieces — logistics, coordination, problem-solving — and sometimes, unexpected challenges. Earlier this season, severe flooding in Mozambique forced us to move food out of our warehouse in Chókwè. Today, we began moving it back.

But the road wasn’t easy. The truck carrying the food got stuck. Then, the rescue truck got stuck. And that’s when something incredible happened. The community showed up. With pickup trucks, helping hands, and determination, people came together to make sure the food kept moving — because they know how much it matters.

This is what The Lunchbox Fund really looks like. It’s the staff working behind the scenes, navigating challenges you may never see. It’s community members stepping in when things don’t go as planned. And it’s our donors, making it all possible — every meal, every mile. We are so grateful to be part of this community. Together, we make it happen.

Early nutrition is about so much more than just food — it supports brain development, school readiness, and a child’s overall wellbeing. At Nomonde Preschool, Principal Zingiswa S. says, “the nutrition program has made a real difference: it’s eased pressure on parents, improved attendance, and helped teachers fully implement the curriculum. Most importantly, the children are more confident and are starting to find their voices in the classroom. On Human Rights Day, we stand for dignity, equality, and access to basic needs for all. At the Lunchbox Fund, we believe education starts with a meal. Because the right to education means little without the nourishment that makes learning possible. A daily school meal restores dignity, fuels focus, and unlocks potential — because every child deserves both nourishment and opportunity. As Principal Inathi S. from Phapha ECDC shares, “With Lunchbox Fund support, we’ve reduced hunger and malnutrition in our communities, easing the burden on parents who no longer have to worry about breakfast, ensuring children arrive at school on time, ready to learn. This support has relieved so much pressure from parents and helped our children focus and thrive.” This Human Rights Day, we’re reminded that access to food is access to possibility. And together, we can ensure no child’s future is limited by hunger.
