Homeless Services United (HSU)
Promoting effective solutions to homelessness in NYC while ensuring homeless service providers have a voice in establishing public policy
Homeless Services United’s member agencies operate hundreds of programs including shelters, drop-in centers, food pantries, and community outreach services. Far too many New Yorkers experience the trauma of homelessness and housing instability. HSU applauds Speaker Adams and the entire Council for envisioning this holistic housing strategy which tackles the barriers to housing throughout our city, from inefficiencies and discrimination with rental assistance vouchers that help people move out of shelter and into permanent housing, to prioritizing the creation of more deeply affordable housing paired with additional Capital Funding to create and preserve affordable units. Through this comprehensive housing plan, as well as proposed zoning reforms, New York City can become a more affordable place so that all New Yorkers can continue to call it their home.
Today, NYC Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and the Council announced , an inclusive housing plan to holistically address a wide range of housing challenges and advance a more affordable, livable, and sustainable city for all New Yorkers.

HSU and Human Services Council of New York - HSC needed to set the record straight about Crain's reporting on nonprofits:
Nonprofits are stewards of public funds with transparency built into our operations. Millions of New Yorkers rely on our organizations and dedicated compassionate staff, and instead of questioning nonprofits and our workers, we need to shift the conversation towards creating a more supportive system which enables nonprofits to focus on their mission instead of navigating bureaucratic obstacles. By addressing the realities nonprofits face and understanding their crucial role in the economy and their communities, we can foster a more informed dialogue that holds these organizations accountable while championing their invaluable work.
Letter to the editor: NYC homeless nonprofits deserve our respect Despite initial opposition, London's C-charge gained public support and is worth preserving, writes Alexander Jan chairman of two central London BIDS and chief economic advisor to the London Property Alliance.

Today our executive director had the pleasure of sharing New York's unique right to shelter model alongside our colleagues Josh Goldfein of The Legal Aid Society with the National Women's Shelter Network . It is humbling to see what other jurisdictions go through and hear how many desperate people they are forced to turn away. We are eternally grateful for the system we've built here in NYC and hope others are moved to implement similar policies. No one should ever be without a safe place to come indoors.

Hola Miami! HSU is thrilled to be in this lovely city and to meet the incomparable local activist and award winning recording artist Gloria Estefan as we gather for the National Women's Shelter Network conference. Listening to how her family escaped Cuba to build a life in the US on the strength of community inspires us to think about how our shelters can better build communities for the thousands of folks seeking refuge in NY today.

What a historic day! We did it-again! The New York City Council overrode the mayor's misguided veto. Now the work begins to implement their critical legislation to reform the CityFHEPS voucher program and help more people avoid eviction and assist so many homeless New Yorkers to obtain housing

Mayor Eric Adams’ recent op-ed on his veto of Council legislation to address homelessness through improved access to CityFHEPS vouchers makes many misleading claims. We released an annotated version that fact checks the Mayor’s claims with links to citations.
