"Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood" - Mr.Rogers

There is a misconception that early childhood education is simply a childcare service or babysitting service but it far from that. Our classrooms and our building/art studio is designed to expose children to a ray of learning and growth in their development.

During the early years of a child's life, he or she is learning to connect with his or her peers and environment, learning to share his or her interests within the school community as well as building confidence and awareness of others. All this is through playing which is the work of childhood.

"Emotional intelligence begins to develop in the earliest years. All the small exchanges children have with their parents, teachers, and with each other carry emotional messages...such encounters mold children's emotional expectations about relationships, outlook that will influence their functioning in all realms of life."

"By us allowing children to lead the way, we are trusting them to take control, giving the message that they are competent and thus building confidence."

During morning arrival, the children are capable and confident in walking to their classrooms on their own. We give children the opportunity to make certain decisions that will help build their confidence and independence.

Last school year K was a bit shy but during the summer when her brother started school we stepped back and allowed her to led the way. Her brother gladly followed his sister into the school, trusting her that she knew what she was doing and we did too.

The first couple of days she gave him a tour of the school. She would glance back a couple of times looking for reassurance and we gave her nod letting her know she got this. Each morning she walks her brother to his classroom before going to hers.

As a Reggio Emilia inspired school, we believe that all children are capable, competent, and creative. We also believe when we as adults step back and allow children to take the led in their own learning experiences they develop life long skills such as leadership, problem solving, critical thinking and communication.

When children are given the space to be curious and to explore their environment, learning can take place in many ways. At Little Scholars EDC we have a building and art studio where children can create and build with materials however they like. Giving them that sense of independence and space to thrive.
