Today we recognize all those who answered our nation’s call to service. Their service has given our nation security and helped preserve the freedoms must fundamental to this nation. Honoring our nation’s veterans is a small but powerful message we can send to them that says thank you for everything you have done and sacrificed. On behalf of the New York Law School SVA, we honor you and thank you for your service.

Today we honor those men and women of our armed forces that gave the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation.
While there is currently much uncertainty and anxiety in our nation due to the outbreak of COVID-19, we will recover, we will prevail. For now, hold those close to you a little tighter, be that good neighbor to your fellow neighbors, do something, anything good, something bigger than yourself.
There are those who would question our nation’s role in the world and those who try to undermine the history of this great republic, but our nation is a beacon of hope for many in this world. Elected officials come and go, but the resolve and the spirit of the American people will always remain.
“American blood and sacrifice is the indisputable part of the world equation. We keep a large portion of the world free, and no matter what disaster strikes: tsunami’s, floods, earthquakes...we are the ones that show up to help. American aircraft carriers, American soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines. More people in this world are trying to come to our shores than any other country. We remain a beacon of hope for many, and God willing it will always be so.”

Thank you to the New York Law School faculty and staff for recognizing our NYLS veterans, past and present.
A special thanks to Dean Crowell and NYLS Board of Trustees Chair (and fellow veteran) Arthur Abby. We would also like to thank Prof. Sandler for this tradition at NYLS of recognizing our NYLS veterans, NYLS alumni and staff members.
A special thank you to NYLS alumni and staff member Jorge Rodriguez for coordinating this event recognizing our veterans. And we would like to recognize all of our NYLS veteran alumni and staff. We thank you for your service.
Finally, we would like to thank Dean LaPiana for his moving speech on the importance of our role in ensuring the rule of law and upholding the tenets of the Constitution of this great nation.
To quote Federalist No. 78: “The legislature should not be the judge of its own powers - Interpretation of the laws the peculiar province of the judiciary- Need of independence on this account- Independence required for judiciary guardians of the Constitution and of private rights as well .”
As future officers of the court, it is our duty to uphold the rule of law, in order to continue this experiment in democracy and our way of life.

In the United States, November 11th is Veterans Day, where we recognize the service of our men and women in uniform, past and present and the sacrifices they made in defense of our nation. November 11th across the world also marks Remembrance Day.
Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed since the end of the First World War to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November to recall the end of hostilities of First World War on that date in 1918 "at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month”. The First World War officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on 28 June 1919. The United States of America and its Allies fought to defend freedom and their sacrifices will never be forgotten. On this day, we remember.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
Lt. Col. John McCrae

Every November 11th Americans pause their work, school and other activities to honor the service of our Nation's veterans. Defense of this great Nation and our freedoms is a calling that requires perseverance and sacrifice like no other, and it is only fitting we take this day to honor our men and women in uniform, both past and present. The New York Law School SVA wishes to recognize all veterans and extend our gratitude for their service.
Today we honor those who served.
Those who answered our nation's call.
Those who defend our families, our neighbors and the American way of life.
