Firefighter Gaudet died of the injuries he sustained and two others were hospitalized following a fast-moving fire that ripped through a building on Main Street. The blaze erupted in the small one-story structure at 1 Main Street - just west of the Chenango River. It was reported around 9:35 p.m.

The first fire and police units on the scene reported smoke and flames coming from the building. The blaze quickly spread to a neighboring building as a second alarm was issued. A third alarm was called a few minutes later.

A major building collapse occurred a short time later and a "mayday" was declared. The three firefighters were taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City. Firefighter Gaudet was pronounced dead at the hospital. The two others were being treated. They were reported in stable condition.
