May the 4th be with you!

On this very special day, the Coalition for Homeless Youth staff and mascot , would like to thank all of our supporters.

Whether you are a Jedi, rebel fighter, Wookiee or politician, we must band together to fight against all actions of the dark side to ensure the needs of young people experiencing homelessness are met!

Whether here in NY, on earth or in a galaxy far, far away, all young people deserve safe and stable housing.

📢📢 We are happy to report that the FY2025 NYS Enacted Budget includes a $2Million legislative add to the OCFS Runaway and Homeless Youth budget!!

We could not have achieved this victory without your support and the steadfast leadership of our champions in Albany, Assemblymembers Linda Rosenthal and Andrew Hevesi and Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal!

This increase brings the total budget for OCFS RHY programs to $8.484M!

Although we know that this is not nearly enough, it is still something to celebrate as we continue to fight for more!

MEDIA ALERT!

In 1989, New York City declared itself a sanctuary city — a place where undocumented immigrants seeking asylum are safe from immediate deportation. But making sanctuary real is tougher than just passing a law.

In this special report from The Laura Flanders Show and The CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies, meet some of the volunteers and local nonprofits providing shelter, legal protection and support to refugees – including the Coalition for Homeless Youth - Training, Empowerment, Advocacy!

Since the city initially promised youth experiencing homelessness in the Department of Youth and Community Development Runaway and Homeless Youth system access to vouchers in 2016, close to 10,000 youth have been discharged from the youth shelter system into another homeless shelter or situation, that we know of.
Let us be clear. Youth in the RHY system are homeless. PERIOD.
Tomorrow the NYC Council will vote to override the Mayor’s veto of a historic package of bills, that will FINALLY GIVE YOUNG PEOPLE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS ACCESS TO HOUSING VOUCHERS.
Thank you to the NYC Council Members who are sticking up for homeless youth and standing up against the Mayor!
We greatly appreciate you everyday, including tomorrow when you vote YES to override the veto of CityFHEPS bills!!
