Hey Silberman Students! Here are the student senate nominees platforms that you can use when deciding who to vote for!
STUDENT SENATE NOMINEES
Name: Kristine J. Montañez
Method: OML
Pathway: OYR
Platform:
Internships and connection to the larger student body seem to be the biggest obstacles facing students of the OML OYR stream, as well as other OYR students. Some of these issues seem deceptively simple like all of the most informative and/or productive common time activities and events taking place before most OYR students are even in the building. While others have a much greater impact, like ongoing issues with internship placement including communication with advisors or clarity on the process, particularly for OML students. As a candidate for the student senate, I understand these issues won’t be a quick fix, but I wish to include students’ voices in conversations on these topics as they are the ones facing these challenges “on the ground.” I believe simpler fixes like establishing a feedback loop that has the potential to affect how these events and programs run is a good place to start.
Name: Zoë Gioia
Method: COPD
Pathway: Advanced Standing
Platform:
As Advanced Standing students, we have particular needs. In my role as a student representative it is my goal to continuously check in with other Advanced Standing students and make our particular needs known and addressed. Advanced Standing students spend the least amount of time at Silberman out of any of the pathways. That said we are not given priority during registration. My peers have expressed concerns that they rarely get the classes that would best prepare them for the work they are doing in the field currently as well as the work they hope to do in the future. Given the short amount of time we spend at Silberman, we need to be getting the most of our education over that short period of time. Our later registration times impede our ability to get the classroom experiences we need to prepare us for our careers. It is my goal to develop a better understanding of how registration times are set and collaborate with students and faculty to develop a system that meets this specific need of Advanced Standing students.
Additionally Advanced Standing students share concerns with the larger student population more generally. Silberman is the social justice oriented school and though we strive for this, there is always room for improvement. We believe that faculty should be better prepared to work with marginalized groups particularly trans and gender non-conforming students through mandatory professional development. We also see a need for clinical students to be provided with more macro level courses where they can develop a deeper understanding of how oppression and racism operate in the field. COP&D students develop clinical skills while at Silberman through our HBSE classes and electives, yet Clinical students are not given the same opportunity to make meaning of the larger systems that impact our work. My goal is to focus on curriculum improvement that centers social justice for all students and faculty at Silberman.

Name: Jana Keith-Jennings
Method: CPIF
Pathway: TYP
Platform:
I, Jana Keith-Jennings, represent the two-year full-time, clinical track, and pledge to work on fostering a more effective working alliance and communication of student body academic needs with faculty around curriculum planning. As a first year student, I recognize the frustrations of my fellow students with the incohesive curriculum and pedagogical structure, as well as limited class section times that fail to consider the increased student population and diversity of needs around child care and job duties during the school year. And as a student representative, I pledge to advocate for more direct collaborative alliance between students and faculty, so that we might maximize our educational opportunities. And finally, as a student representative, I pledge to work on redrawing the student-faculty senate constitution so that future generations of students might organize and implement changes more effectively.
Name: Vikki Campos
Method: CPIF
Pathway: OYR
Platform:
Goals for Student Faculty Senate: I Vikki Campos, represent the interests of OYR and pledge to work on redrawing the constitution of the student senate election process to make it more accessible and conducive for elections to be held in the future and students of Silberman to organize effectively. I want students to have input in their curriculum, internships and student activities on campus.
Name: Andie Markowitz
Method: COPD
Pathway: TYP
Platform:
Goals for Student Faculty Senate: As a CO student I have already found that the role of a community organizer within the social work field can be difficult to discern; which means that we have an ever-evolving definition of our role as professionals and a unique perspective of the education that we need from our school work. As your CO representative I hope to highlight the unique experience of CO students and advocate for the learning and training that we need before we enter the professional field.
Name: Eric Sturm
Method: COPD
Pathway: TYP
Platform:
Goals for Student Faculty Senate: I believe Hunter College, and CUNY in general, can do more to support their students and faculty. Building elected representation of the student body is one of the best ways we can improve conditions for students. Quality instruction, competent school administration, and financial assistance should be the norm, not just an ideal. As a student senator, I will do my best to ensure that the needs of MSW students are addressed by Hunter and CUNY. As an undergraduate I was deeply involved in student organizing at NYU, and for years I have worked on access to education for marginalized students. I support the CUNY Rising Alliance, the 7k or Strike campaign, and continuing to expand the Office of Special Programs.
Name: Kareem Hewitt
Method: CPIF
Pathway: TYP
Platform:
Goals for Student Faculty Senate: I believe Silberman remains a great institution that truly utilizes social work code of ethics. I hope to support Silberman students in order for them to feel welcomed, open, and included in their educational journey. My main goal for my time on the Senate includes working with the curriculum committee to implement a more intersectional and multicultural framework for all coursework and classes. I hope to help sustain and create spaces for proper facilitation/intervention when problematic situations arise. Lastly, I believe in transparency between students and faculty/administrators so I hope to assist with creating productive platforms for academic/administrative/social concerns to be addressed.

Method: CPIF
Pathway: Advance Standing
Platform:
Sometimes, academic careers can become arduous journeys. In part, to increase the primacy of student self-efficacy, and to give credence to the student experience, whenever possible, student government should augment academics by helping to mitigate difficulties endured by students. I will work hard to advocate for student's needs by addressing the frustration of intrinsic resources available at 68th street not being viable for students studying at 119th street. Here at Silberman, it’s hard for student government to gain traction within the student body. My goals for student-faculty Senate are to increase the capacity of student representation and to advance the intellectual acuity of current and future students. To do this, I will give students a voice by becoming a go-between for students and faculty. To enhance the interdependence of students and faculty, before attending curriculum meetings, I will poll students to accurately assess their interest’s so I can apprise administrators of student’s thoughts, feelings, concerns, and desires related to academic and social needs. Among other goals, I will work to educate students about available resources. For example, chartered social groups are entitled to receive financial assistance in the neighborhood of thousands of dollars to enhance the groups experience while studying at Silberman.

I would be honored to represent all of you on behalf of the OML cohort in the Student Faculty Senate. I am excited to take advantage of the opportunity to be in the room when decisions are made about us with regards to resources, curriculum, faculty, and so much more.
The OML first and second year cohort is comprised of students with unique experiences to offer that might otherwise be overlooked since so many of them are not on campus during the daytime throughout the week. As current or former managers, we may be able to tackle a problem from a different perspective or to offer a solution that may seem outside of the box for other students. My goal is to utilize the platforms through which all OML students are already communicating and sharing ideas, which is Slack for the second years and Band for the first years. Then I will bring these ideas to the rest of the student body via the Student Faculty Senate. By listening to their concerns and suggestions, I can represent them in a meaningful and authentic way. We often talk about gatekeeping in social work, and this is a great example of how I can use my gatekeeping power in a positive way to open doors and let everyone in no matter their method, pathway, or any other barrier to access.
I also want to emphasize that as a white, heterosexual, cisgender woman, I will work to hold myself and everyone involved in this process accountable to seeing through an anti-racist and anti-oppressive lens. I will most likely make mistakes, and I look forward to learning from them and from all of you in order to make our school a more just, inclusive, representative, and engaging place. Thank you for reading this and for the opportunity to share a little about myself!
Name: Andee Pace
Method: COPD
Pathway: OYR
Platform:
As a representative of the OYR CO community, I represent a small constituency of students at Silberman. It is my intention to encourage and promote inclusion, diversity and receptiveness to all faculty and students. The main goal is to move towards positive enhancement of the Silberman experience. One part of this is to rally for mental health outreach at the Silberman School. It is extremely important for all students to have access and not be limited due to geography. This is just one example of the type of changes that I want to advocate for. Allow me to reinvent student rights and accessibility.
Name: Aisling Cooper

Pathway: TYP
Platform:
As a q***r and trans person of color, I would like to ensure the curriculum includes and reflects our voices and stories. Additionally, we need to facilitate better accessibility for our disabled, mentally ill, and chronically ill students. We are not just a service population nor should we endure ignorance from the field or in our classrooms. In order to make this institution more inclusive, we as students have the power to improve our educational system and structure.
